The Saints led the NFL in yards per play last year 6.2 YPP, Arizona the worst 4.1

Saints averaged 6.2 yards per play. On any given play they were expected to earn 50% more yards than the Arizona Cardinals on any given play, that's crazy.

    Most yards per play
    #1 Saints 6.2
    #2 Redskins 6.2
    #3 San Fran 6.0
    #4 NY Giants 5.9
    #5 Denver 5.8
    #6 Atlanta 5.8
    #9 Carolina 5.8
    #10 Seattle 5.8

    The worst
    Arizona 4.1 YPP
    Jets 4.6
    Jacksonville 4.8
    San Diego 4.8
    Cleveland 5.0
    KC 5.0
    Chicago 5.0

What have these teams done to improve? Arizona got a new coach and QB, Jets have a new QB, new RB, Jacksonville has a new coach and the QB is on the hot seat who ever it is, probably a place holder for next year, SD has a new coach, Cleveland has a new OC, KC has a new coach and QB, Chicago has a new coach.

A crappy team with a poor offense and decent defense makes the coach more likely to be fired than a crappy team with a decent offense and a crappy defense. It's as simple as that. Your offense sucks the coach gets fired and most likely your staring QB as well.

    Total Plays
    New England 1191
    Detroit 1160
    Indy 1109
    Denver 1090

    Least # of plays
    Titans 957
    Giants 968
    San Fran 969
    Seattle 974
    Miami 981
    Buffalo 983

New England ran a high tempo offense, they focused on speed and they pass a lot. Detroit and Indy are dome teams that passed a lot. Denver had Peyton Manning.

Giants/San Fran/Seattle all ran less plays but averaged between 5.8 and 6 yards per play which was at the top of the league so these offenses were more efficient.

    3rd down conversion

    #1 New England 48.7%
    #2 Denver 45.1%
    #3 Atlanta 45.1%
    #4 New Orleans 44%
    #5 Dallas 43.9%
    #6 Carolina 43.1%
    #7 Indianapolis 42.8%
    #8 Detroit 42.5%
    #9 Green bay 42.3%
    #10 Pittsburgh 42%
    #11 Giants 40.6%
    #12 Seattle 40.2%

Look at the QB play on those teams. Pretty much all average or better.

    Worse 3rd down conversion %
    Arizona 25.2%
    Jacksonville 29.6%
    Cleveland 30.7%
    St. Louis 32.1%
    Kansas City 33%
    Cincinnati 34.1%
    Oakland 35%
    San Fran 35.1%
    Tampa 35.8%

Look at the QB play there? Pretty much all crappy with a few exceptions.

The more you look at the stats you realize just how awful Arizona's offense was last year.

AZ QB's were running for their life. Az had so many minus yard plays I thought at some point the league was going to fine them.

    most penalties

    Rams 130
    Baltimore 121
    Dallas 117
    Redskins 116
    Cleveland 113
    Seattle 110
    San Fran 109
    Houston 108
    Oakland 108

    Least
    Atlanta 55
    Giants 72
    Miami 82
    Jets 83
    Minnesota 90

It makes me think that penalties are overrated. Baltimore had the 2nd most penalties in the league last year and won it. San Fran and Seattle had a lot of penalties as well, it formed their identities. Some of these other teams obviously had a lot of penalties due to a lack of talent.

Atlanta had way less penalties than anybody last year.

With Carson Palmer and Bruce Arians, Arizona could improve a lot over last year by adding those two alone and even minor improvements in their offensive line. They might not win a lot more games but they could do better ATS. Last years team with a bad line and bad QBs has to improve this year. That's guaranteed.

Go look up nfl QBs points per game last three years, Palmer is among the bottom 4. If you think he's going to reboot Arizona you're crazy

Palmer's positive numbers where earned late in the 4th/garbage time/under 2 minutes.

He was basically Tebow, where he would shit all over the bed for 3 3/4ths quarters, and come alive in the last bit. Except, his team sucks, and no amount of comeback was going to bring them back. I wasn't aware of this last year, only upon looking up his stats coming into this year.

Anyway, he is probably the best QB in a Cardinal uniform since Warner. He is so much better than anything they had last year.

He doesn't need to do much, and I feel the line will be greatly improved this year.

Anyone else surprised to see the Bears that low on the list for average yards per play? Cutler can sling it, Marshall had a great year, and Forte isn't a pushover. Team has plenty of offensive talent.

That is strange, however, I believe it's most likely due to the few weeks they had where they were shit.

But, you hit on a solid point. It's all about Oline. No matter how much firepower you have, the Oline is paramount. The worst Oline's in the league last year are seemingly represented at the bottom..

Did you see who Arizona had at QB last year? Those guys couldn't play 3rd string for most teams. Kyle Orton, Matt Flynn and Jason Campbell were 2nd stringers. Look at that throw up Arizona had. How can you run an NFL offense with guys that aren't NFL players?

    Chalky.

I see QB, coaching, line, receivers, and continuity with QB firmly #1.

Cleveland has a pretty decent offensive line actually (from what I've seen) anchored by Joe Thomas. They just have no playmakers on that team.

The Bears should have a very good offence this year. Love their off-season additions.

What do you think about the Bears head coach?

The team's offense should get better but their defense should get worse.
