2011 BCS Championship Game: Auburn fans stranded by South winter blast



Some empty seats might be the scenery as the 2011 BCS Championship game will unfold today between Oregon Ducks and Auburn Tigers in Glendale Arizona.
A large winter storm currently battering and will continue to bring inches of snow and ice through a large stretch of the deep south from Texas all the way to the Carolinas. Ten states down south are under winter storm warnings, Weather Channel reports. Northern portions of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and all of Arkansas could see snowfall totals of 3-7" of snow. The governors of Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee have declared emergencies and schools and colleges have called off classes. Massive number of Auburn fans were stranded were seen stranded in airports in Atlanta and other airports in the South.

Meanwhile Auburn University students must go somewhere other than campus to watch the Tigers play in the national championship bowl game Monday. Auburn University has canceled all viewing parties and other events planned as the state prepares for severe winter weather. As seen on Auburn's site,
"Auburn University closed Monday, Jan. 10, due to winter weather; Planned BCS viewing events canceled" -AUBURN UNIVERSITY - AUDPSS/EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT"

The 2011 NCAA football season reaches its finale Bowl tonight as the Auburn Tigers and Oregon Ducks square off in the 2011 BCS Championship game. The 2011 BCS national title game should provide plenty of excitement as we get to see Heisman Trophy Winner Cam NewtonCam Newton do battle with the high-flying offense of the Oregon Ducks. This finale of the 2010-2011 Bowl Championship Series will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium, the host facility of the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona on January 10, 2011 8:30 p.m. ET.
The game will kick off around 5:30pm pacific time on ESPN.

Some hotels near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport have seen a surge of bookings for Sunday night from Auburn fans wanting to make sure they can make it to Monday flights to the BCS Championship Game.

The Clarion Hotel at 5216 Airport Boulevard had 153 of its 195 rooms booked by Auburn fans. Almeda Anthony, guest services manager, said the hotel started getting calls from AU fans Friday night after reports of snow expected to blanket Birmingham tonight.

"Some have been asking if we are close enough for them to walk in case they can't drive to the airport," she said. Jeremy Managan, front desk clerk of America's Best Inn at 5101 Airport Blvd., said about 60 of its 200 rooms for Sunday night were reserved by Auburn fans.

"We've been getting calls constantly," he said, adding about 40 roms remained available as of Saturday night.

The Holiday Inn Airport Hotel estimated about 50 rooms booked so far by Auburn fans who want to make sure they can make it to the airport, said Matt Simpson, front office manager.

The weatherman was obviously correct in predicting a thick layer of ice and snow in the Tuscaloosa area, and Bama fans have always said "Hell would freeze over before Auburn wins a National Championship".....

Yeah, I think a lot of what bama got was ice!! Snow is one thing, but several inches of ice, or an ice and snow mix is a different story. The weather forecasts I saw were saying that area was going to get ice, freezing rain and snow. 3-7" of that is pretty serious anywhere, but especially in an area that doesn't get much winter weather.

Just north of there (bama/tenn border) some areas got 11-12" of the mix!!!

Unfortunately alot of the Auburn fans that got stuck at the airport were only able to sell their tickets back to the brokers for face value. Which I guess is better than nothing. But to think, you bought a ticket a week ago for $1000 and when you picked it up, the broker offered you $3000 to buy it back and you didn't take it. Now you're stuck with a ticket and no plane ride or you're stuck selling it back at face value.
