Report: Steven Jackson to void deal

Steven Jackson's record-setting career with the St. Louis Rams could be coming to an end.
Jackson, the Rams' career rushing leader, plans to void the final year of his contract to become a free agent March 12, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Monday.

Jackson has topped 1,000 yards rushing for eight seasons running. But with his 30th birthday approaching in July, the Rams appeared uninterested in giving Jackson a lucrative extension beyond the 2013 season. When the sides were unable to reach agreement before last season, the Rams gave Jackson the ability to void his deal in March 2013.

Jackson is scheduled to earn $7 million in salary for the 2013 season. It's unclear whether the Rams would have kept Jackson on their roster at that price. The team drafted running backs Isaiah Pead and Daryl Richardson a year ago. Richardson in particular showed promise right away, rushing for 475 yards with a 4.8-yard average.

The Rams have initiated a youth movement under coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead. They have the NFL's youngest roster at present, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Jackson has 2,395 carries for 10,135 yards and 56 touchdowns over his career, but he has never played for a winning team in the NFL.

I think Elway and the Broncos have the room to sign him.
I hate Denver, but with Jackson in the backfield, they become instant favorites in the AFC

If Green Bay signs him, forget about it.

If I were in charge in Atlanta, I'd pull out all the stops and pay Jackson.

    Interesting as this story unfolds.

Lotta tread on those tires. He's likely not going to make what he left on the table with St Louis elsewhere, especially if he wants to contend. St Louis is trending upward, too - kind of a shame he is leaving now. Actually, I think it's a mistake, what he's doing. I'd be shocked if he got more than 3 years in a deal and was in the neighborhood of 7 mil/year. Not a knock on him, it's just reality for RBs in the NFL. Shame, really.

St Louis is trending upwards? i don't agree there. Jackson is making the right move, the guy deserves to experience the post season. The Rams were trending upwards a few years ago, but not now.

St.Louis is 100% on the rise. No question. Look at last year....they were the only team that basically shut down the 49ers. Not once, but twice. They've got a ton of talented, young skill guys, and Bradford is a good QB.

Looks like the Rams will draft a runningback in the first round if they plan to let him go.

They don't have a top 5 draft pick for the first time in about 5 years. Fischer has this team playing much better, but they still need alot of help

Zero chance. Maybe 2nd or 3rd. They drafted two rbs last year.

I had to look it up, I didn't realize the Rams were that bad.

I don't see much opportunity for the Rams in that division, SF and SEA are the 2 best teams in the NFC.

At this point in his career, Jackson is not much of an improvement over McGahee, if even at all. And aren't the Broncos already the favorites in the AFC?

He might have only 2 good years left, but he could be the difference in a team winning over those 2 years, so he'll have a lot of leverage to get himself overpaid. Who will throw the most dough at him?

packers need him, just for a legitimate running threat... and hes a hell of a pass blocker (rodgers got killed last yr)... dude is stout, like 4% body fat... takes good care of himself

Packers need an o-line more than they need a RB.

True, but last year at this time nobody thought Seattle had a chance in the division. Rams have a long damn ways to go, but they are slowly improving. Jackson has been great, but the rams can go younger and cheaper at the RB spot. I like it

Rams play great vs their division under Jeff fisher. Loved their draft last year too, their d is much improved, need to focus this draft on offensive side. S jax is always hurt anyhow.

Denver does not become an instant favorite in the AFC with him. They would be competitive for a couple of years maybe, but the other top AFC teams have the youth to stay on top longer.

what kind of o-line can you get that lets you hold the ball in the backfield for 30 seconds each down?... unless u have the $$$ 2 build a robot o-line, you need to run the ball atleast once in a while to take some pressure off

5 mil a yr for s-jax, and backfield packages for cobb, is cheaper... If im denver, I just keep Moreno/Mcghee

Rodgers lead the NFL in sacks. GB's o-line is about the worst in the NFL. Not like Jackson is cheap either.

GB has a decent line when they won the SB a couple years back. But Wells, Colledge and Clifton are long gone.

GB really needs a true LT, Newhouse is a guard at best. They drafted Sherrod, Bulaga but they can't play LT.

They drafted Bulaga to play left tackle, but he was good enough to play RT opposite Clifton. Rumor has it, he will be moved to LT this year.

He played hurt all the time. Anyone who had him in fantasy the last 5 years would be used to him not practicing all week, then suiting up for Sunday. Guy is a fukkin' monster if you've ever seen him in street clothes.
