Why was Michael Borne allowed to sign with Cleveland?

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb...2_a8&eref=sihp

I don't get why 1)Atlanta didn't resign one of their more important hitters and 2)how he lasted this long unsigned till Cleveland scooped him up.

thats a hell of a pickup for the tribe!

he was one of the Free Agents that got a 1 year 13.3 year qualifying offer from their old team. So that when they turn it down, the old team now gets a 1st round draft pick as compensation from the signing team.

so Cleveland doesn't just pay the $ they lose a pick.

that is why he was still around as are others

Indians were in unique position where they only had to give up their 3rd rounder. Still a shocking move for the frugal Indians.

    Funny comparison:

    Player A ; age 25-29 692g 290/357/390 223SB 15.2 fWAR
    Micheal Bourn; age 26-30 749g 272/338/365 257 SB 17.4 fWAR

Similar players only player A was a slightly worse defender but a better hitter with better plate discipline - but offers a major lesson in what can happen.

Just like he meant to say Bourn did you mean to say "Come on" becuase Common just doesnt make sense unless its a inside joke or something. But hes a nice leadoff hitter im surprised they let him go also. Wasnt like they werent spending tons of money this offseason.

The Braves did offer him a qualifying contract which, I believe, was 13.3M for one year. That's why Cleveland has to give up their #69 pick. Boras just had him convinced that he'd get so much more than 4/48 that he turned it down.

It's a great pickup for Cleveland and again goes to show how underrated speed and defense is in the game. They might just compete this year.

Bourn is nothing special. I think Tribe overpaid for him and they lose a draft pick. He probably hits .270 for them and maybe steals 40 bases.

This is one of the problems in sports today. Organizations don't want to take the time to develop players through the draft. Everything they do is for the short term. They are like children and/or heroin addicts in that they are only thinking for today. When this signing goes south they will be lining up next year to sign the next bust.

Overall, Bourn isn't going to put them in a position to win the division, but this should make them a bit more of a possibility for that 2nd WC spot should a few things bounce their way. Bauer turning into an ace, being one of them. Masterson/Ubaldo/Myers is a pretty awful rotation

I'm assuming the braves offered Bourn a similar contract to what they offered BJ Upton, and Boras shut it down. The braves were not going to overpay and as a Braves fan I am glad. Bourn is good, but not that good.

12 million/year for 4 years is way better than 13.3 for one, for an aging speedster so Boras did a pretty good job

he was offered 13.3 million for ONE YEAR, Upton got 15 million for 5 years.
they only offered the 13.3 so they could be sure to get a draft pick as compensation for him. they were 99.9% sure he would turn it down
