Would you even want to be a professional poker player?

Say you enough financial backing to be rolled to play 2/5 and cover the cost of living for 6 months. You're able to play poker live at the casino/card room of your choice. Is this a life style you'd even want to live? Would you quit your job to play cards?

If you enjoy the game and are able to still have fun while experiencing the brutal variance of poker, than heck yes! But you need to see if you can play 50+ hours a week of this wonderful game online each and every week before you can even consider going pro lol

Poker is a hard way to make an easy living!

So if you have the mental capability and stamina to handle variance and play on top of your game and still have fun than I would say go for it!

One of my friend's that is pro sent me a graph couple weeks back of the brutal variance that is experienced in poker.

150,000 + hands in 2 months and $8,000 under EV.... sickest thing I ever seen in my life

And this is just 1 day session $2k under EV lol It would be soul crushing to me to lose that much knowing im playing correctly and just running like shit

Poker is better than most jobs because I hate having to wake up or sleep at certain times but if you spend a lot of time in the casino it is not going to be good for your health and will get boring.

Thanks for sharing those graphs. Very interesting. No possible way I could play Poker professionally. Just don't have the patience it takes to play very long sessions.

2-5 is pretty small game to base your living on unless one truly had a small monthly nut.

    Never say never lol

If you really enjoy the game, than you can take some steps to build up your stamina

I used to play 1-2 hours a day and was exhausted lol a 15 hour week for me was like omg epic long session. Now I avg 50-60 hours / week lol

If anyone would be interested we could start a SBR Poker Group lol

You can make $25-30/hour playing 2/5 live

    40h / week 4x a month = 4k + a month

$25-30 an hour is pretty lofty. I think $15-20 is more realistic. You're still looking at 30-40k a year "working" 40 hour weeks.

lol obv if you play poker professionally you wont be doing 40hours a week, and if you ever played live 2/5 or 1/2 it looks like more than half the players have down syndrome lol

5/10 would prob be min you would need to go to go pro, and thats where the solid regs are. The skill differance between 2/5 and 5/10 is astronomical

Nah, I think I'll save myself the misery of suckouts and rivers of misfortune. I already get upset enough when I lose my betpoints in poker. Don't think my heart could handle the pressure of having my entire means of living being dependent on this game.

I'm just putting it into perspective with the 40 hour week. Obviously it will vary depending on the player and place one is playing. Places like Cherokee don't have dealers so there is no tipping.

Playing 1/2, $8/hr is a realistic expectation for most. How many hands do you get per hour, 20-25? Six big blinds per hour is doing some work.

If your planning on playing pro and gona go do 1/2 or 2/5 dont. Go play online. You need less bankroll, less vaariance, less stress, same hourly. $25NL online 4-6 tables will get u hourly of 1/2

4-6 tables of $50NL will get u hourly of 2-5

You need to add in transportation, and food costs to your overhead when you play live.

Sure all the numbers sound good if you are super disciplined. But if you bet sports or have a tough time making it past the pit you have no chance. Also whats to stop you from taking shots at bigger games in the middle of the heater. Discipline is key. If you are and have a backer why not take a shot unless you have a great career going for yourself already.

Look at your friend who you say is a pro. He plays 150,000 hands in 2 weeks and still loses... yet you're saying it's easy to make $25-$30 an hour?

Any common sense poker pro will tell you that making ONE bb an hour is a standard rate of return for a pro. Are there players who make more, of course there are but any above average player will not make 5-6 bbs an hour.

I know with rakeback profits will increase. If you were played in the best days of propping with myself and VegasVixen you would understand that there is a specific style to play for maximum profits. I never played anywhere with less than 100% rakeback. The best I ever got was from mansion and that was 180% rakeback.

Anyways, bol attempting to live your dream pal... we've all heard the story before and knows how it will end.

I think your best option if you had bankroll and living cost is to follow the circuit. Games are better and you don't get stuck grinding on regulars and waiting till Friday and Saturday nights for really good games. I believe you can make a killing following the tourney circuit and grinding the sit n gos. Most of the time those players just throw their money away because they are waiting for their tournament to start and have nothing better to do.

I think we all had dreams of making it big after watching "Rounders." Matt Damon made it look so easy. All you have to do is find a Russian mafia guy who likes Oreo cookies and go heads up against him and you're set.

rounders was a great flick, but it was still 5 years before the poker boom.
