RedSox sign Napoli to a 3 yr/39 mil deal

I'd say this is a pretty good signing... Napoli's 31, should be worth every penny of this contract. Maybe a slight drop off in the last year, but will still be effective.

The Red Sox have signed Mike Napoli to a three-year, $39 million deal, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman.

That's an average of $13 million per season, which isn't bad considering Napoli's enormous power potential and the lack of true sluggers on this winter's free agent market. Napoli will play first base for Boston but should retain fantasy eligibility at catcher because he'll make spot starts behind the plate. The 31-year-old hit 24 homers in 108 games this summer for the Rangers.

What's he worth Opie? Look at what 1B go for, and you have to give him a little bump since he'll play some catcher.

Great signing by the Red Sox. Napoli should continue to hit well at Fenway.

I think it is a good signing for them. They sure needed a catcher no doubt.

opie this is a big mistake, I think nap is worth that money , especially with the talent at catcher in the league, so now the Rangers go back to the low paid catchers , going to be a shitty year for Ranger fans.

I love how everyone is in love with Nolan Ryan and John Daniels down here in Texas, just watch what happens when they lose games, nobody is going to come watch the foreigners they continue to put on the roster.

I was really a big Napoli fan. I hated to see him go, I just think he was far too inconsistent to tie up $40 million on. He had a great year in '11, but the stats seem to show that was more of an anomaly than reality. I think what you got last year was more of what he is really capable of producing.

    I guess we will see........

I can agree to that , except last year he was hurt most of the year, and as to 2011 being an anomaly to me it is tough to say, he always hit the ball good in Arlington, why i honestly thought he would never leave, maybe 40 million is too much(reason why he left) but damn its hard to say he is not worth it , when you compare it too what is available

plus I think when you add some slow fat ass catcher in the Rangers lineup , it takes away all the speed and makes you into a national league team

Napoli's numbers at fenway the last 3 years are pretty amazing. not sure if it is just small sample size or what.

I'd love to see a chart of his fly balls last year projected onto the Fenway dimensions.

in the last 3 years he is ops-ing 1292 with 6 hr's in fenway

He's only played there a total of 19 games, so it is a really small sample.

But he was absolutely an Angel killer when he was here. Hopefully he doesn't have that same kind of revenge on his mind whenever he faces Texas.

Adrian Gonzalez was getting like 20+ million a year

I think for 7 less million Napoli gives a pretty comparable OPS

unless a guy is in his first 6 years, you won't find too many cheap 1b-men out there.

yep. Thats unbelievably the going rate.

I think the Rangers simply didn't feel comfortable to committing 13.3 million per. Seems like they're in the process of freeing up some funds. Hopefully it'll lead to a big signing.

Ryan and Daniels have a pretty good track record after losing "name" free agents. Cliff Lee for Adrien Beltre, and CJ Wilson for Yu Darvish both come to mind.

My first reaction to seeing this was that it was a good sign for the Red Sox. After dumping all those huge contracts, I see them trying to piece together a better budgeted team. Always liked having Napoli in fantasy baseball with his catcher eligibility

Blue Jays did very well to lock up Edward Encarnacion for like 9 million a year mid season for 3-4 years

is .265 and 20-25 homers avg per year worth 13 mil a year now?

maybe if he was exclusively a catcher

Sox also looking to add Dickey.

would be three nice pick ups. Napoli, Swisher and Dickey.

though it makes me fkn cringe that the Mets would trade their Cy Young winner away after just signing Wright for years.

    typical Mets.
