My Betting Rules to Keep Me in Check

Fairly new to sports betting and these forums, but wanted to write about my recent experience sports betting and hopefully offer some assistance to others. I know there are plenty of write ups of what not do in sports betting, but I think making rules specific to yourself is very important!

I already feel so much better just writing these out. Now I feel like I can bet without fear that I'm going to lose control, and more importantly without being stressed! Instead I just enjoy it now!

The reason I came up with these rules for myself is because I blew my entire bankroll recently. I got to a point where I thought I was invincible and started placing huge bets. I was highly stressed watching the games, and my friends were starting to get nervous that I was "losing it". I bet to make money, but I also want to enjoy it. Just like a job, making money is the goal, but you should also enjoy it!

I hope that you all will consider doing what I did and write out some rules for yourself, I promise you will win more money and enjoy the ride a lot more!

    Best of luck fellow betters!

    My Betting Rules
    1. All betting decisions will be made at the beginning of the betting day. I will not make additional bets due to wins or losses earlier in the day, no backing up bets, etc. NO CHASING
    2. I will make primarily straight bets (75%+ of all bets)
    a. I will have two betting amounts for straight bets
    b. $250 for straight bets that I’m confident in
    c. $50 for straight bets that I’m extremely confident in.
***The amounts will obviously be based off the individuals bank rolls, I currently play with a $5000 bank roll, so most bets will be 1/20 of my bank roll and bets I’m very confident in will be 1/10 of my bank roll.
    3. I will minimize my parlay bets. (only 10-15% of my bets)
    a. $50 max for 5+ game parlays
    b. $100 max for 4 or less game parlays
    c. $150 max for 3 or less game parlays if I’m very confident in them
    4. I will not get emotionally attached to bets, no getting angry or overly happy when I win. Just another business transaction that I will move on from.
    5. I will not bet games that I’m unsure about or that I have not done extensive research on.
    a. No placing bets that “I heard” were really good. We always get friends trying to sell us on a bet, don’t let it happen!

Anyways maybe you have already done this or maybe this doesn't interest you, but I hope we all take back the control of our betting, being out of control is not a feeling anyone wants!

Another rule for me is to have a balance target at a given sportsbook. Once I hit that target I will withdraw my money, and search for a deposit bonus at a B or higher rated book here at SBR.

Sounds like you got a pretty good handle on things for being a newbie, of course you are bound to hear from the many brilliant minds here on how you got it all wrong. Just saying, its pretty brutal around here . But hey welcome

I think that is a definite must to my rules, I just had a pretty substantial bank roll a while back, and had I withdrawn 75% I still would have had a great bankroll to work with. If I may ask, what is your balance target?

Thanks, I figure if I'm gonna do this I better do it right. I've been reading through a good amount of posts, does seem to be pretty brutal, but it wouldn't be an online forum if you weren't frequently insulted.

Our rules are very similar. I had $300 riding on the Panthers tonight, and decided to check the final score on my computer before going to bed. I was reflecting how it was just another transaction and I had zero emotional attachment to it.

Overall I really like your rules

A good idea to force betting discipline like this.

However, stake sizes of 5%-10% bankroll are far too high. Most professional gamblers use 1-3%.

    Plan The Bet/Bet The Plan
Having the discipline to follow the plan, that's a totally different ball game.
    Wishing you well!
