Is that what it is? I went to the post office this morning and it was closed. Kept trying to figure out why it was closed then left.

OK, history of this holiday ties to Texas freeing the slaves. OK, most can agree that abolition of slavery was a good thing.

It's a FEDERAL holiday. So, the politicians get the day off.

Mainly Midwest and the South.. We always celebrate it many years before it was a federal holiday. In my Opinion should just stay regional celebration and not a holiday

See now this is a good holiday.

We don't need gay pride month or black history month. One day is good enough for holidays. Just my opinion. Don't need a full month to celebrate something. A single day is good enough or it gets out of control and becomes a farce.

Well a day off is a day off I guess. Then again since I run my own bidness, it kind of sucks to give out another free day's pay to the employees. I hope they enjoy it and come back tomorrow ready and eager to work.

All these race and or sex related holidays are pure garbage! Jesus gets Christmas and Easter and that's it (two days a year), yet blacks get this day and a black history MONTH. Gays get gay pride Month.

Just doesn't seem legit to me. Leave gay and race out of holidays I say!

^^^ Now that's the way to deal with it. Not triggered about who celebrates it, not complaining about the cost, just getting on with his own business.

It's an historical event. And Black history and pride months, however annoying you may think they are aren't holidays.

I think some education on the holiday would be great. I know of it but really not sure what the meaning of the day is.

In LA we have Caesar Chavez day and Armenian Genocide day which are pretty well known locally although they weren't always holidays.

Frankly in America we don't have enough days off so I'll take it.

This is exactly what ancient Rome chose to do. Cater to the mobs, the special interests, until over time its ideals were totally lost and it collapsed within.

Shea--real question here and not just a sarcastic reply to you. I knew that the ancient Romans had a ridiculous number of national holidays, but were they based on catering to the special interests as you say? I just thought they had a day for their plethora of gods, a day for Caesar's birthday, Caesar's wives birthdays, the birthdays of his kids, Caesar's dogs' birthdays, etc., etc.
