New Jersey sports betting licenses expected in January

New Jersey sports betting licenses expected in January

UPDATE, 3:50PM ET: SBR Interviews NJ State Sen. Lesniak on Sportsbooks in AC

Say what you will about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, the man keeps his word. Dominating the wire today are reports that New Jersey plans to offer sports betting licenses as early as January 9th, 2013. As expected this is already ruffling the feathers of sports league executives, the first of which is NCAA Executive VP Mark Lewis, who announced Monday that the NCAA would no longer use New Jersey as the venue for five events scheduled for 2013.

"Maintaining the integrity of sports and protecting student-athlete well-being are at the bedrock of the NCAA's mission, and are reflected in our policies prohibiting the hosting of our championships in states that provide for single game sports wagering," -NCAA Executive VP Mark Lewis. | Read more

So what is the NCAA going to do when sports betting is finally legalized on the federal level? No more championships in the USA, I guess they'll have to move them to some other country where sports betting is illegal.

What a crock of shit, how many NCAA hoops tournies are held at UNLV, and how many bowls are played in Las Vegas?

These leagues ALL better realize that without gambling their revenues would be less than half, including the NFL. Why do you think hockey sucks so bad for making money? BECAUSE NO ONE BETS ON IT.

Sports betting should really be legal everywhere, but for some reason it never gets any real push, mostly because the special interests in Las Vegas make sure it gets squashed before it gets any steam.

But states have a right to govern themselves, open up enough places in state and there is nothing feds can do, except threaten to take aid away, which at this point is a joke anyway.

It's really a question of which places are going to want the license...

Setting up a book, paying for license, hiring and maintaining is not cheap..

Who's going to end up spending all that money and have the feds come in and stop them or future problems..

Until it's accepted at the federal level, it's going to be difficult for any investors to invest in starting up shop I think..

And I do believe they have a 5 year deal to be in Vegas. Such blatant hypocrisy...

I honestly can't think of a decent reason why this is opposed by the major sports leagues...as long as NJ plan would prohibit betting on games involving NJ college teams or college games played in NJ, etc.

All the leagues just publicly say it to save face. In the closed boardroom meetings they all know what good gambling can do for their leagues. Fukk watching an afternoon baseball game on a Wednesday without action on it.

it's pretty hypocritical of the NCAA to throw a fit when they have a big presence in LV.

Agree with whats been said about the NCAA, NFL, etc. being hypocrites. But can't see the Feds rolling over and allowing it to happen without a long fight in the courts.

    Lou,

What do you mean by "say what you will about New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie"? I don't think the G.O.P. has had someone as successfully moderate as he is since Reagan. He admits that his "default" position on abortion is/was "pro-choice," even though he can't say that anymore until he secures the nomination in 2016. When asked if homosexuality is a sin, he replied:

Well, my religion says it's a sin. But for me, I've always believed that people are born with the predisposition to be homosexual. And so I think if someone is born that way it's very difficult to say then that's a sin. But I understand that my Church says that but for me personally I don't look at someone who is homosexual as a sinner.
He wants to stop incarcerating non-violent drug offenders in lieu of treatment/rehab. He seems to have a real dedication to green/renewable energy sources over oil and coal. He's a proud Catholic but doesn't allow those values to influence his philosophy on governance. He doesn't even buy into the nation-building argument for keeping the military engaged in the Middle East.

Idealogically, of course, I'm a staunch Libertarian. Pragmatically, however, I'm something of a Reagan Democrat. The Republicans have a lot of good ideas about personal responsibility and smaller government (even though in recent years those cries are total lip service) and if they ever got off their Christian high-horse I'd probably send some support their way.

This guy is your first, best hope at taking your party into the new century. Learn to love him early, if he stays this way I think he'll have my vote in four years.

he has also been nothing short of a trailblazing pioneer in terms of advocating for freedom of food

he introduced the Defense Of Marinara Act for one, and two, not only single-handedly prevented a state ban on funnel cakes, but then kick-started a state initiative to get funnel cakes offered for sale on every other block in NJ, yes with use of public funds which some may see as hypocritical in light of his supposed stance as a cost-cutter, but his freedom of food advocacy is unrivaled
