How Many Hardcore Gamblers Do You Know That Got Rich From It?

I ain't talking about some stiff that went to a casino, put a dollar into a slot machine and won a mil either.

I'm talking about hardcore gamblers that bet every day or week on games. Guys that grind it out.

How many of them do you know that became wealthy purely from gambling?

So I was talking to an old-timer yesterday in a bar watching the games.

Guy is from NYC. Tells me he watched the first Super Bowl all the way to last years.

Asks me if I like to play the games. Said who don't?

Says he's been playing the NFL and other sports now for so long, he can't remember when he didn't.

Then looks me right in the eye and says "Do you know how many guys I know that got rich just from gambling? None. Not a single fukkin guy. Ain't that amazing?"

    Got me thinking.

CC fraud? Cheating craps games? I wasn't even talking about this.

I'm talking about guys who grind it out trying to get rich from betting on sports.

Or maybe go to the casino every day playing cards trying to grind it out.

I don't want to hear about no darkside shit.

playing the "don't pass" on craps isn't cheating

apparently sam/mud were talking about booking bets

however it's done, the only ways to be a winner in the long run are:
    1) bet a huge amount and get lucky
    2) turn the -ev of betting into +ev, either through casino mailers, taking the bets instead of placing them, being a bonus whore, or fraud stuff

When I was a kid I worked in Vegas one summer , of course this was OLD Vegas

I met several guys in their 40s (-FH- types) who made their living playing 1.00 BJ , 7 stud & sports -- They were avg guys doing their best to keep a low profile

Made a living is not the same as becoming wealthy.

I'm with you guys, I can't think of any bettors that made a ton that didn't book bets a lot too. You have to wonder though, if someone was smart enough to get rich off of sportsbetting, would they be dumb enough to run around saying it? They would probably say they got rich off some dot.com stocks or sold a patent to a big corporation or something.

True , at least one of those guys was a family man and he supported his family strictly on gambling. I have no idea how long it lasted because I left vegas at the end of the summer and went back to school in the SEC

If you get enough to be able to support your family, that is probably better than 98% of the entire gambling public.

The problem with hollywood is they glamorize everything.

    It's far from reality.

You never see an actor in a movie playing a gambler arguing with an operator on the phone about him trying to withdraw money. Or a dude trying to work out a deal with his bookie because he got fukkin buried.

So if nobody personally knows anyone that got wealthy from being a hardcore gambler, what is the lesson to be learned from this?

Is it that nobody gets wealthy from just gambling?

Is it that we are all just basically wasting time?

Is it that we should just give it up because you won't get rich from it?

    What is the fukking lesson?

fishhead makes a living gambling, but he got wealthy from iowa farmland.

i think the lesson is, if it isn't fun, and you aren't on the +ev side, then you shouldn't do it

but come on, it's fun and games become unwatchable if you have no money on them

there are billions of people we know a few does not mean anything. Why did cascade stiff people? They were buried by professional gambers, because of bad risk management. Same thing with most small books who never really get off the ground.
