NFLPA sent a letter to the league today asking to have the "real" refs reinstated immediately due to the replacements creating an unsafe environment.
This should pretty much force the NFL's hand to getting the deal done. All it would take would be one injury that could be blamed on the replacement refs, and the NFL could be stating down a giant liability issue.
As always, it's all about litigation.

I disagree. NFL is scared over future litigation regarding player safety. They've proven it with all the new rules they've instituted over the past few seasons trying to limit the severity of collisions.
When the NFLPA is throwing around terms like "unsafe work environment", it's going to cause some concern. Not saying they cave, but certainly has to be a cause of concern, and stimulate discussions.

Oh...in no way do I think the league actually gives a fukk if the players get hurt. I think it's the perception they worry about.
There's no question the only thing that strikes any sort of fear in them is the billion-dollar lawsuits that are coming in the years ahead. They've gone to great lengths to appear that they've taken every conceivable precaution to limit injuries.
I think if this issue muddies up that plan, they'll act to remedy the situation.
