**best advice to be long-term winner

there are more successful people here (opie) but i don't think i would want to switch places with anyone, i have a fun, fulfilling life and thought i'd give a couple tips on things i did in the past

    1) bonus whoring, much tougher to do these days without neteller in the us, but still - if all your bets are being made to meet rollovers then you are on the + side of the juice instead of the - side
    2) affirmations. write down what you will have 20 times a day (or 50). be realistic and very specific, like "i will have $100,000 in the bank by january 1, 2014." or "i will be married to a girl i love by january 1, 2016". sounds silly but it really did work for me.
    3) do stuff that people think is crazy, rather than follow the crowd. using a math model to adjust your bet size really doesn't do much in the long run and wastes time and effort. i have listened to "learn esp" tapes (crazy huh?) and they really worked in getting me to see the future. watching a ton of sports and analyzing helps in this process of having a good feeling about what will happen.

as long as you're having fun with sports gambling and not losing too much, i would say you are a winner.

As far as gambling is concerned it's all about Entertainment. And more Entertainment. To think you are going to make living out of it is a Pipe dream for most. Have some fun and don't bet over your means. I learned this the hard way back in the day.

    What does that even mean?

Bonus whoring hasn't been a practical strategy for anyone looking to make anything significant in over five years.

i was trying to say that tweaks in your bet sizes are probably going to have little effect on your overall returns over a lifetime of action.

if the line is way off, make a huge bet on it, that's easy enough without needing a computer to tell you that...

the days of good bonus whoring are long gone i agree, there were times i was making $500/day just using my name, girlfriend, and dad (sigh)

There is only one way to maximize expected growth in a bankroll - maximizing the logarithm of your bankroll (aka Kelly Criterion). That is not a math model. It's a formula.

What is a tweak in bet size? What's a "huge bet?" How do you know you're not overstaking?

fair enough, but nobody ever really knows anything. nobody "knows" that it's maximizing expected growth because they don't know that their bet has a 90% chance of winning vs a 85% chance of winning.

i have always had a different view of bankroll size, for example. if i have $100,000 in the bank/books but keep netting $10k/month over expenses then my bankroll should be considered to be higher than $100,000 (unless i am betting all of it today and will find something else +ev before netting more income).

If you're consistently +/- 5% in assessing win percentage, you're not a winning gambler to begin with. Precise edge estimation is not tantamount. So long as you have an edge and aren't wildly inaccurate in estimating it, staking according to edge (i.e. utilizing the Kelly Criterion) will increase bankroll growth significantly over any other staking strategy over time.

there's a difference between forecasting and clairvoyance or nonsense like talking to ghosts.

for me it's about thinking at a higher level than those making the lines or on the other side of a trade (not really that hard).

Just ordered the best ESP tape on Amazon. Plan on listening to it on my 30 minute commute to and from work.

    I will hit a 25 team $20 parlay by 12/21/12

yikes chalkydog, a 25-team parlay might not fall under the category of "realistic" but best wishes with it

you will certainly get something more out of the esp tape than listening to the mindless drivel on the radio, especially morning shows run by complete morons

Yeah, I am already rethinking the 30 minute drive home. I can do away with the morning sports radio. Mike and Mike is the best, and they make me want punch small babies.
