Moving to vegas
My girlfriend and I have been contemplating moving for the past two years. She bartends and serves now and I have a 70k a yr job. I really want to try it out for a yr, obv would not have a job except what i find there and betting. I put almost 10k a month into offshore, do you think it's worth the risk to try it out for a year. Please any input is appreciated.
You only live once. You can always go back to where you came from if you don't like it. The time to do it is before you decide to have kids. I'd love to transfer to Vegas with my company because I'm sick of this up and down weather in Tennessee. With 3 kids, and a wife with roots here, its an impossibility.
If you have to ask the question then no, its a bad idea.
you're probably not going to find a 70k/yr job in vegas right now (or possibly any job)
let's say your girlfriend makes 20k/year. combined that's 90,000/year or almost 2k/week - there's no way to consistently make that much money betting and you'll probably end up broke and separated from your girlfriend. i'm not saying that would be a bad thing (no girlfriend nagging and no job are probably good things), just pointing out the most likely scenario

I can tell you this unless your girlfriend is really good looking it's nearly impossible to land a good bartending or serving job here.

What are you going to be able to do in Vegas that you can't already do right now, gambling-wise. At least with your job, you have a replenishing bankroll, whereas you go down there, and if you can't win now, you'll surely be broke in no time. I have never had to gamble to survive and if you're in the same boat as me, might be a mental hurdle that's harder to jump than it would seem.

Job market in Ohio is awful... very unlikely you'd be able to get your job back if things in Vegas don't work out. I wouldn't take the risk.
Do you have reason to believe you could make anywhere close betting in Vegas to what you are making now?
I say only come here if you either have a job lined up here, or a lot of savings in the bank. At least $4,000-5,000 saved up. Then use that savings money to support yourself until you find a job
Don't expect to make any decent money gambling. Think about it, say you make 2 $100 bets at -110 in a day. You win one lose one. You lost $10 right there.
Or how about me on Saturday. I made 7 bets of $50 each. I lost 5 of the 7 bets and lost $160 for the day. But on Tuesday I made 15 bets at $40 each and won 11 of the 15. Made $225 that day. But the bad Saturday I had pretty much cancelled out the good Tuesday I had. Overall for the past week, from Monday-Sunday, I made a profit of $6. That's right, $6.
For each good day you have you will have a bad day, no matter how good at handicapping you are. Realistically your goal should be to hit 53-55% and grind out a small profit each month. But unless your bankroll is 6 figures that small profit won't be enough to sustain yourself.
So if you come here, get a job. No matter how good you think you are at betting on sports, it won't work out well enough to sustain yourself. You have to have a steady income.
Also I can not stress this enough: stay away from the tables, slots, bars, and expensive restraunts. It's all -EV. Do not play any -EV casino game. Period. And stay away from alcohol and the likes. It's not necessary and will only drain your money. And eat cheap, until you get a job at least. I am talking places like Subway, CiCis, Taco Bell, etc. and buy your own food. No partying, clubbing, going to bars, etc., until your financial situation is in order.
agree frog, which brings me back to my point. What are you going to be able to do in Vegas that you aren't already able to do now, with better odds and ability to shop easier? Best to stay put and keep gambling online.

Betting in Vegas brings peace of mind. You can cash out instantly and not have to pay any fees to get your money. Plus they are regulated by the State of Nevada so you know you are dealing with a reputable business that will not screw you over.
You might get better lines overseas and online, but that is cancelled out by withdrawal fees, length of time it takes to get paid and the fact that you can be screwed over at times. And all the hoops you have to jump through to bet online from the US.
But unless you have a 6 figure bankroll betting on sports should not be a source of income it should be a hobby and source of entertainment. Yeah winning is nice and it can bring in some extra cash but in the long run its not going to be a sustainable and steady source of income
Def would not be able to get same job, I'm a safety Director for a trucking company....jobs are tough to come by in this industry, at this level.....but i really want to take a shot...please help....confused

I have no problem winning honestly but enough is never enough....i can go 8-2 on the day and lose money ...i guess if i had a personal accountant lol

No offense but you or anyone else that thinks they can make a living gambling in Las Vegas are slim to none.
The best advice I can give you is to only come here if you have money saved up.
Unless you can transfer here with your trucking company, you won't be able to get a job here from where you are at. Employers here in Las Vegas will not even respond to people from out of state. So if you want a job here you first have to move here.
And the job market is still bad here, so realistically I would expect at least a month of job searching before getting an interview. And it all depends on what kind of job you are looking for. The good paying jobs at the casinos/hotels are pretty much impossible to get, so you would have to settle for a low paying hourly job at such a place doing unskilled work until you can work your way up.
As for your girlfriend, you got to have different kinds of certification to work as a server/bartender here. Unless you know someone or pay off the HR director, you will start as and be a barback if you want to work on the strip(where the money is). I am sure you can get a bartending job at some off strip local bar/casino, but the money won't be as good. Same can be said for being a server at a restaraunt. Not gonna happen on the high money strip locations unless you are really good looking and have a lot of experience. But there are always chain restraunts off the strip that she could apply for and then try to work her way up.
As far as moving here goes, it depends on what you want. Let me tell you right now, I already said it, but you can't make good money betting on sports. It just isn't going to happen. So it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want to live. If you want to live a lifestyle of making decent money(50k+ per year) then don't do it, because that kind of lifestyle isn't obtainable for the first year or two or three you will be here. But if all you care about is sustaining yourself and making just enough money to cover the essentials(housing, food, etc.) then I say go for it, if you can discipline yourself enough to be smart with your money. Because this town its really easy to blow your money quick. Every day I see someone trying to hitchhike home with their suitcase because they obviously lost all their money and whatever method they had of getting home(their car or plane tickets).
Personally, if I were making the money you are making right now, I would not come here.

Let me tell you my situation.
I am 24, college grad, single male. So I had no attachments or commitments.
I live here in Vegas 9 months out of the year. I go home to Texas to work my summer job in May/June/July. I am in Vegas from August-May.
I moved out here because the company I work for transferred me out here. So I already had a job lined up. Not that good of a paying job, 3,000 a month after taxes, but its something. But since I had to get certain documentation and such to work the job here in Nevada, I had to live out of my savings for a month before I got everything set up. I came out here with $4,600 saved in the bank. The key is to stretch that $4,600 out.
I got a room to rent off of craigslist, for $450 a month(utilities included). I bought my own food, but if I did eat out it would be cheap. No more than $7-8 dollars. And only once a day.
I stayed away from table games, slots, any casino game, and alcohol/partying/strip clubs. That is the best way to lose money and make your life miserable. I haven't drank alcohol for 2 years now. It's not necessary and its a money pit. If you are coming here to party and live it up, don't. The top priority for the City of Las Vegas is to separate its patrons from their money. Stay away from anything that unnecessary and is aimed at separating you from your money.
I do wager on sports, but its only for fun. I don't bet more than $40-$50 a game, and I am disciplined. I don't do longshot underdogs or parlays. No horse racing. I don't chase losses and I don't bet more than 1% of my bankroll on a single game. If the way you bet on sports is more stressful and heart wrenching than it is fun, you are betting too much.
I don't live the highlife here. I make enough to get my and live somewhat comfortably, but again I am a young single male. I didn't leave a high paying job to come here. I didn't come here to strike it rich at the casinos or sports books.
Coming here is all about expectation. If you are here to try to hit it big and make thousands of dollars from gambling, don't. If you are here to live it up and party, dine at fancy restaraunts and frequent the bars and clubs and all that, don't.
But, if you are here to sustain yourself, experience the joy of living in Vegas, bet on sports for fun and recreation, and be responsible, its worth a shot. But again, if you are leaving a job paying $70k a year to come here and make, at best, half that, why? I wouldn't do it. My 2 cents. I'd rather make 70k a year and live in the middle of nowhere North Dakota than my current situation here in Las Vegas making half of that. I didn't come here with the expectation to hit it big betting on sports and be set for life. I came here because it was an option and a worthwhile endeavor at that point in my life.

I know a guy who got turned down from a job at a Cantor Gaming Sportsbook(at the Palms I think) because he was over-qualified.
They will actually turn people down for being too qualified. They want lemmings who have no qualifications for jobs like that.
In Vegas you will either have a low paying hourly job or be a big shot.
The low paying hourly jobs are jobs like burger flipping, being a host at a restaraunt, working at Wal Mart, sports book ticket writer, etc.
The high paying big shot jobs are the management jobs, bartending/bell/valet/dealing/cocktail waitress/serving jobs at high roller places like the 5 star resorts and casinos, but to get a job like that requires being on waiting lists upon waiting lists and then when you finally get on going from on-call to steady extra to part time to full time which can take years to ascend that ladder. The only exceptions here are if you are really good looking, or if you pay off the HR/hiring manager(the paying off process is known as the Vegas juice) or if you know someone who can hook you up. Next time you are here look at the valet/bellman at the hotels. They are all mostly older people. If they are younger than 30 its because they knew someone. That's because by the time you get to be full time at the job where it pays well you are old. It's a long process. Either that or you got the job before the economy crashed and were able to hang on to it because of seniority.
There is no in between.
I myself am in between, but I am an exception. Not going to say what I do or where I do it, but its a 36k job on the strip. But like I said I transferred here from out of state so technically you can say I knew somebody to hook me up. I got lucky.
Majority of Casino bartender/cocktail waitress jobs are union so she can forget about getting a casino job since so many of them with years of seniority are out of work right now, even if she did find a casino job she would have to start as bar back.

Unions here are part of the reason the job market is so bad
The unions control the strip. The unions vote themselves higher pay/benefits at the expense of cutting lose workers. That's why there are no jobs, the unions conceeded jobs instead of pay/benefits when the financial crisis hit.
To get most jobs on the strip, you have to be in the union, so its all about seniority. They will hire back people who used to be in the union who got laid off first before hiring a newbie or scab.
I hate unions, but they control the politicians and the city here. It's the way it is. Nevada could solve its unemployment problem quick by getting rid of them but the unions are too powerful.

I enjoy myself here, I like to spend a lot of time at the pools and the sports books when I am not working
But I hope I can move upward one day and get a better paying job so I can have a wife house kids and family, whether that be here in Las Vegas or not.
Cost of living is pretty cheap here so thats a plus.
It's hot, and my car's AC went out and I am not going to pay the $1200 to fix it, so that's a pain. I am saving up for a new car instead.
I view my life here as a short term thing but I wouldn't mind living here long term. You are right, its a great place to live if you are single and responsible and have reasonable expectations on what to expect.
But I view myself as the minority. Most people aren't responsible, and come here expecting to get rich off of gambling and end up going broke. Either that or come here to party hard and live it up and then wonder where all their money went. I say for every responsible person like me there are 9 irresponsible people who come here and bust.
