How to dispute a debt from a collection agency? Police report?

This is the 2nd time ive had unauthorized charges on my CC after depositing to a online sportsbook but its the first time a collection agency has contacted me about it...,

Back in febuary i deposited $500 into bovada. The next day i had 4 unauthrized transactions on my CC. I disputed the charges with my bank. My bank found them fraudulant and removed them from my CC.

Yesterday i got a letter in the mail from a collection agency stating i owe QVC easy pay $212.53 for a E reader i purchased. Ive never done business with this company and i didnt purchase a e reader. This is the same company that i reported fraudulant charges to my bank about.

When i told the collection agency about it they said i needed to file a police report. Cant i just send the credit bureaus a affidavit including the results of the investigation from my bank already deeming the charges as fraud?

No idea but Amex credited the charges for purchases from my card that was stolen but they still requested the police report I had to fill out. Gave them the case number the next day and never dealt with the issue after that.

The way my bank handled it was they made me sign a affidavit( police report i believe) stating the charges were fraud. About a month later i got a letter from my bank saying the investigation found the charges as fraudulant activity.

Collection agencies are the biggest piles of shit as businesses and lie constantly, I have done work for a couple and it's insane. What you need to do is question the validity of the debt and the burden is on THEM to supply you with information of said debt.

I had a 10000 dollar charge on my amex a few years ago

    From a furrier in nyc

Called amex. They investigated and rescinded charge.

Easy to get someones number exp and code on back but u gotta have someone at the store working with u if the purchases arent online.

Then you want to confirm if it is or if it isn't on your credit, you can do this at Freecreditreport.com or something similar. If it is on credit you will want to take the proof that it was found to be fraudulent activity and get in communication with the 3 credit Bureaus - Experian, Equifax and Trans Union and send them this proof, and demand it be removed from credit as soon as possible.

One tactic that you may want to try is to send the collection agency a certified letter stating to not contact you regarding this debt under any circumstances. I would also tell them to forward any further inquiries directly to your bank. If they go after your credit you can contact each of the major bureaus and request an investigation into the items you are disputing. From that point the bureau usually has 60 days (I believe) to address the item or it must be removed from your credit report. This is all a pain and takes a little leg work but in the end its worth it.

FYI certified letter is inexpensive. Also send the disputes to the credit bureau certified as well which will allow you to know the date the documents are received and the time starts to tick.

Stud thanks man. When i told the collection agency person on the phone that i had never done business with this said company she said she would flag the account under dispute and i wouldnt hear anything else from the collection agency. They didnt have any information on the purchase besides that i bought a 7 inch e-reader. Then she said i needed to contact police department.

Very rare for a collection company to have anything other than the account number and balance that needs to be collected. What the actual purchase was makes 0 sense for a collection company to be handling.

Get as much information about the company trying to collect from you as possible, file compaints with your state Attorney General's Office and the state where they are trying to get you to send money.

Yes. That is all you need to do. Most people you talk to have no clue so they ask for stupid stuff like a police report. You don't call the police when this happens. Maybe they thought it was from a stolen purse, wallet or break in but either way, it was a stupid request.
Send them the report and you have done all you need to do.
I had it happen to me and that's all it took.

It seems odd that the same guys who have union/employer disputes, traffic disputes, sportsbook complaints often have CC/Collection agency problems.

    Weird.
