Weber is a great Player but if you're going to pay somebody that much money in a small market he needs to be able to sell tickets and much more.

I know what you're saying BP-Weber is a great hockey player but in my opinion a fundamentally great D-man doesn't bring in your average hockey fan-dare I say average US hockey fan...? Similar to Bieksa in my mind-great player that will win you hockey games long term but are people going to flock to see him? NSV had to match though...Cheers

He does sell tickets because he helps them win games. They'd probably win 15 less games a year without him and have no shot at the playoffs... which could easily cost them over $10 mil. Matching the offer for one of the top two d-men in the league was a no-brainer.
They can trade him next year for a hell of a lot more than the compensation they would have received from Philly if things go sour in Nashville.
This team was pretty close this year and might have made it to the Cup if Suter hadn't completely disappeared vs. Phoenix... or Radulov and Kosyn could stay off the bottle.

Nashville isn't messing around anymore, they beat Detroit and feel like they can win. Tennessee of all places is securing a nice core going into 2013

They'll only be good enough to bow out in first or second rounds.

LA is a bigger market and can pay big contracts. Nashville can't and this deal will handcuff them.

So essentially LA was the team the Flyers could have been if they had a decent goalie?

No. The Flyers are the organization that LA wants to emulate and wished they were. They should be called "Flyers West".

So they should have lost Weber for 4 late 1st round picks (a terrible deal for one of the best defenseman in the league) so that they could hope to... what? Build a cup-contender with a roster full of mediocre players and cap floor team salary? Float in the league until they eventually get moved? Or maybe hope to get lucky enough to land another player of Weber's calibre (and pray that he'll absolutely love Nashville so that he'll take a gigantic paycut)?

preds committed themselves. they're all in to make a winning team

they have great D, great goalies, solid pk but still doesn't feel like enough to be a feared team
