LaRussa to start Cain and not Dickey!

This guy tries to micro-manage everything with his pitcher hitting 8th. This guy has an ego. He thinks that he invented baseball. R.A. Dickey must get the start whether a knuckleball is difficult to handle or not. What a joke!

Both are deserving in my opinion. You must look at the full body of work in the 1st half....not just a stretch of a few.

Sure Dickey's overall numbers are a bit number, but it's not by any way overwhelming. Onl spot Cain falls short is record, and that falls solely on run support difference.

I'd be perfectly fine with either starting.

This is certainly nothing to be outraged about. It's just the fukkin all-star game!

How is Ryan Dempster not on the all star team? Best numbers in the NL.

Larussa is baseball managerial god, and the baseball gods smile on him whatever he does.

Don't forget, this is Larussa's last chance to micromanage a game so he is going to go crazy with it.

He'll probably end up having McCutchen pitch if it goes to extra innings, who knows.

Makes no sense to me that a retired manager gets to even come back for this. Need to come up with a new rule there somehow.

"this guy" has won more gms than pretty much anyone in the sport, 4 time manager of the year (should prob have been more), has several WS appearances and a few rings to boot... so show some fukkin respect and take your homer hat off for a second cause RA dickhhead is not the best pitcher in the nl, if TLR (one of the best of all time) doesnt wanna start that gimmicky sideshow act over a REAL pitcher like Cain than that just the way it is..... he wants to win and he probly saw the spankies blow ra dickhead up not all that long ago...

Managers with the best record at the mid-way point should be doing it. They have more incentive to win this game therefore they will pick the best pitchers and manage the right way.

posey got voted in over Yadi i believe (i know yadi on leave anyway) but wasnt Buster voted ahead of him? dont get me wrong ruiz having a great yr but Yadi is clearly the best catcher in baseball and his offense has been very good as well.

apparently sf fans have lots of time on their hands to figure out ways to vote 1000's of times..

makes sense actually. Have Dickey come in to face the starters after the hard throwing Cain throws 2 innings. Their timing will be all off. Than after Dickey put Strasburg out there.

Tony Larussa is smart here ... Cain is still better than dickey ... Cain had been putting up good numera for year .. Dickey just this year and against a real hitting team in NNY he got rocked ... Imagine facing hitters like that through an entire lineup ... Dickman would get rocked son

its not crazy at all..Because this game actually means something he felt his best chance was sandwhiching in the knuckleballer inbetween a hard throwing guy like cain and then another hard throwing guy like strasburg or hamels..that makes Dickey most effective as well..If this game meant nothing I think Dickey would start because as you mentioned he is having the better year slightly..but from a strategy standpoint, I think he has more then justified his decision.

But choosing a starter for the All-Star Game isn't the equivalent of picking a first half Cy Young award winner or something. If we were going just by the numbers then Greinke would be starting over both of them- and he didn't even make it on to the roster. Dickey has had a slightly better half than Cain overall, but that doesn't necessarily make him the best pick for this particular game.

When one of your two starter options will have the opportunity to pitch to his own catcher, that becomes a big factor. When that battery works so well together that they recently put together a perfect game, that's an even bigger factor. When the alternative option would be have a pitcher tossing knuckleballs to a catcher who's never caught them before, it becomes clear why Cain got the nod here.
