What is the best timeline of stats to use ?

When looking at games and using stats to cap, is it best to use info for the last 10 games or season? Seems to me that last 10 would be better as players and teams slumps would disrupt season info.

It's also important to grade the level of competition that these stats were generated against imo. Especially in football.

why wouldn't you use any and all information?
being selective isn't a good way to cap, last 10 has even more of a negative/positive effect from a couple of good days
