Help me with the SBR Gambling Dictionary

Ok guys, I have a challenge for you.

Many posters come on here not knowing what some of the basic terms used in everyday gambling means. Terms such as moneyline, total, juice, etc are foreign words for them. I need your help in starting an SBR gambling dictionary of terms to help these posters become more familiar with the lingo

Remember guys: at one time every single one of us did not know what these terms mean, and while we had to find out through research perhaps we can make it a bit easier for others and have all of this information in one place.

I know many definitions for these terms can be found throughout the Internet, however, surely we can compile our own list in layman's terms

Did I mention there would be points given for the first well written definition of each new term that is not just copied from another site, but written in your own words?

Hedge a wager = A bettor can Guarentee a profit by taking two positions on a wager to secure a profit. Example would be if I were to wager a series bet on team A and team A was tied up 3 games to 3 games in a 7 game series to team B. I may want to hedge that wager and place a bet on team B to win game 7 for a profit.

    Sure why not!

After explaining to a poster on private message what ML, totals, etc are thought it might be nice to have a place on SBR with all of these terms defined instead of typing it out over and over, but sure feel free to add in phrases like these as well

Action Points also known as Power Points: Betting the margin of victory vis a vis the point spread. Bettor places a unit (for example $25) and receives that unit for each point scored beyond the number. For example, I want $25 per point on Miami -6. If Miami goes on to win by 16 the bettor would receive (16 point margin of victory - 6 point spread = 10.......10 point margin beyond the number X $25 = $250)

Conversely, if the bettor loses, he loses the unit + the vig, in this case $27.50 per power point.

SBR Badges = the key to getting action. Girls dig them more than hockey scars.

Vig is actually paid by winners not losers so wherever that list was copied and pasted from is wrong.

When you lose you lose whatever you bet when you win you collect what you bet minus the vig. So whether you bet 100 @ -110 or 110@-110 you get paid whatever minus what 110 factors out to if it wins. To get an 'even' number you HAVE to add the vig in first. But that doesnt mean you pay it up front it just means you used simple math to figure out an even pay back if it wins.

Also a Buck used to be a 10K play but since so many recreational guys started it was changed to $100. Some old school bookies (not many left) will still ask for clarification, especially if the player makes parlay bets and large bets that are all over the place in terms of amounts.

Dime line is also not 10% juice it is simply a 10cent difference between the opposing lines. Which will eventually spread to larger lines as the odds increase.

"favorite" is semantics but in a few cases the 'favorite' might not be expected to win. favorite should really be any team that has higher odds than the opposing side at a majority of books. But there have been plenty of games with MLs on some teams of -110/100 but spreads of PK 100/-110, so depending on what pool you took both teams were technically favored, at least by the odds.

    juice *see vig

    nickel line *see dime line

Odds another semantic debate, at least in regards to sports betting. In cards and dice and things with finite possibilities then yes odds are accurate.

point spread, DEFINITELY not the prediction of the finish, it is simply a line made to induce action on both teams, books arent in the practice of trying to predict scores if they were they wouldnt be in business very long.

Some are semantics, some are clearly wrong. But I am sure that was cut and pasted form somewhere so the errors are the ones most people tend to make anyway.
