Peyton Manning is a huge risk, but somebody has to see if the guy can still play. I see this going down as a Houston texans Tony Boselli deal. New team thinks that they are getting a brinks truck filled with gold on to have a roto rooter show up. Boselli was never the same after the Jag let him go and the Texans thought they were getting a franchise left tackle. There is a reason Irsay let Manning walk and its not the money, the guy doesn't have 3 or 4 more good years left in him.

The only time he really had a bad D was in the first few years of his career and last year which he did not even play.

In reality he only had TWO years with a very bad D, 2001 and 1998.

Once again I look for REAL students of the game that can look at factors besides the obvious. Yes the Colts defense was usually decent with points allowed but because they usually couldn't run or stop the run they were always HORRIBLE AT TIME OF POSSESSION. Please show me a QB that can dominate the game without the ball? Manning did beat Miami a few years ago with 14 minutes total time of possession. Lets look at Peyton's last game w/Indy. Jets 17-16 final. Jets 33+ minutes time of possession and Caldwell is calling timeout w/30 seconds left so the Jets can set up the winning field goal. Indy finished with 18 players lost to injured reserve and still went 10-6.

Indy's best team was prob 2005. In the playoffs Dungy gets completely outcoached by Cowher & staff and Indy falls behind 14-0. Manning brings them back but Nick Harper can't outrun Roethslisberger on a fumble return and then VanderShank can't make the field goal at the end either. Other people have to make plays to win big games including the SB. Bill Polian consistently left Manning with a finesse team that couldn't run the ball, stop the run, or force turnovers because they were so vanilla on defense.

This is totally off topic, but lakerboy why do you have a picture of Adolf Eichmann as your avatar?

Adolf Otto Eichmann[1][2] (March 19, 1906 – May 31, 1962)[3] was a German Nazi and SS-Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel) and one of the major organizers of the Holocaust. Because of his organizational talents and ideological reliability, Eichmann was charged by Obergruppenführer (General) Reinhard Heydrich with the task of facilitating and managing the logistics of mass deportation of Jews to ghettos and extermination camps in German-occupied Eastern Europe.

The Colts overall were not a good team.

If you gave Peyton Manning a strong defensive team like the 49ers, Bears and Ravens. He would have won multiple super bowls.

The only reason he even has a ring is because of the Colts Defense.

3tds and 7 ints makes you a super bowl winner........

No matter what excuse you make for him, he does NOT step up in the playoffs while people make it sound like he's a 120 rating QB in the playoffs but he losses because his team gives up 50 point a game........

you do realize that the jags only made the playoffs two times after mannings second year? the players you mentioned were at there peak in 1997 and 1998 when manning was just entering the league. try to get a clue before you talk shit. the jags only finished above .500 3 times after 2000. seriously are you that stupid? 5-11 teams battling for playoff spots

the titans had just as many 4-12 /5-11 seasons as they did 11-5 seasons. they had a couple of good teams and there best team was just before manning emerged.

Peyton will dictate terms of contract so the guaranteed money is going to be high. This isn't a 3rd string guy we are talking about. Go save your paper route money so you can play your -300 baseball plays or teasers that can't lose but still do.

More importantly the jags and titans weren't even in the same division as the colts until 2002. The afc south didn't even exist until that year. By then, the jags were a different team and the titans were past their prime.

Its the NFL teams have all the control. Manning wil mre than likely be looking to get 30 million up front and soem stupid inscentive laden copntract. But more than likely teams will be offering 10-12 million and the same type of contracts.

But like I said they wont offer anything until he has a physical and they run him through a gauntlet.

Manning really selective about who he is going to see as well, basically only visited two places and has completely ignored 7 or 8 others. tells me he has team that might be willing to give him a free roll and maybe not scrutinize his injury as much as some others might.

regardless signing him wont be the worst mistake any team can make, redskins already did that, but with that organization could you expect anything less? Proof that money doesnt equal brains and you cant play fantasy football for real.

Yeah the 2006 Colts have the biggest playoff comeback in Championship Game history with 32 points in the 2nd half because of the defense. 38-34 final. Manning goes for 402 yards in 07 and they give up 28 to San Diego and lose....yeah great defense! Finally Indy was down double digits to the Jets in 09 and Manning goes for 3 tds-0 ints, 377 yds for the win. They can't kick a field goal in 05 to Pitt....can't tackle Sproles vs SD in another playoff loss. ITS NOT ALL MANNING PEOPLE??? I don't see Brady throwing for 400 and losing....NOR EVER HAVING TO BECAUSE HE'S ALWAYS ON A WELL ROUNDED TEAM WITH SOLID DEFENSE & SPECIAL TEAMS!

    Bottom line:

2009 Colts with Manning = Super Bowl
2010 Colts with Manning = 10-6 with 18 players finishing the season on IR
2011 Colts without Manning = WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE

How did I forget this one....Colts over KC 38-31 in a 2004 playoff game. The Colts "solid" D forced ZERO punts on the day but yet still won the game! Great argument there K13 and LakerWaffenSS man....teams that force zero punts for the game and still win are solid arguments for solid defense and overrated QB play.

I agree Manning does a lot for his team, but saying he's had it a lot tougher than Brady is total horsesh*t. When has Manning ever had to win playoff games in the freezing cold and snow? Or regular season games for that matter just to get into the playoffs? He's had the easiest career playing on turf and inside a dome. Hell the Patriots had a grass field that was so awful by the middle/end of the seasons for so long that finally the NFL stepped in and forced the Patriots to switch out to their new fieldturf surface when they were away from home for a couple weeks back in 06 i think because a previous re-sod didn't cut it. Tell me that doesnt affect your career?

Not to mention Brady hasn't had a strong D whatsoever dating back to '09. They were ranked 31 overall last season in total defense, 25 in 2010, 11 in 09 was an alright year, but they had no WRs (again) for Brady to throw to, and he was coming off his knee surgery that season after being out all of '08.

Indy's team total defense has pretty much mirrored the Patriots for the past 6-7 years w/Manning and Brady each missing a season and the difference from Manning missing 2011 and Brady mising 2008 being the Pats had a much more capable backup in 08 with Cassel. They also had better prime receivers in Moss and Welker than Wayne and Collie, Garcon were this year for the Colts, and a stronger D that year. The Colts were ranked 20th in 2010, 18 in 2009, 11 in 2008 right behind NE at 10 (although Brady wasn't playing because of his knee injury) 3 in 2007 (right ahead of NE at #4 during their 16-0 season), 21 in 2006 when Pats were #6, but Brady again made super bowl this year with the 31st ranked D, so Manning could certainly be expected to make it with the 21st. The Patriots have needed to get in just as many shooutouts to win the past few years as Manning has with the Colts because their D is suspect as well. The fact the Pats even made the super bowl with their D this past year was pretty historical.

You also reference Manning making a comeback in the championship game, biggest playoff comeback ever..that goes both ways. Manning played like hell the first half and dug his team a hole by not putting points on the board as well as their D allowing to score as much as they did...well the second half goes both ways too..if the D doesnt keep possession advantage and keep them from scoring then Manning doesnt even have an opportunity for the offense to put up points, so yeah, team sport.

    Doylfish,

You bring up some good points and as a Colts fan I still can't say I would take Manning over Brady. I just don't buy the "Peyton is a choker" bull$hit either. You'd have to agree that Belechik has provided Brady with more well rounded teams than Manning ever had. Without looking at the stats I think the last Brady/Manning duel from 2010 is a typical example. Manning threw 3 tds (or 4?) with 3 picks and about 370 yds while Brady won the game with around 180 yds passing. Manning had to do EVERYTHING typically for Indy to win while Brady could often ride out his running game & defense.

Notice how Peyton went 4-2 vs Brady during this period as well when both defenses were similar. See how that works when one QB has to face these guys in their prime....Ty Law, Seymour, Rodney Harrison, Bruschi, Vrabel, McGinest, etc.

Law, McGinest definitely weren't in their prime or even on the team for most of the past 6-7 years. Seymour yes absolute prime, countered with Freeney in his prime for the Colts (I loved Seymour, but I'd have traded SU for Freeney in a second), Harrison also had lost his prime step, still a good and effective player, had a couple serious injuries with the pats though (a la bob sanders) as for vrabel, he was mostly out of his prime as well certainly after the 07 season and then got trade to KC as a throw in during the Cassel deal.

Soeaking of Freeney, I hear rumblings the patriots might be able to convince him to restructure, see how much he values winning over making a big contract this season on a presumed gawdawful team

No...I'm talking about when Brady beat Manning out of the SB in 2003-04 when they met. NE had all the playmakers on defense and Indy was too vanilla on defense anyway.

^^^^Ah yes, you are right. The colts still had Freeney with double digit sacks then too though! And the thing that manning had that Brady didn't was a top flite offense, #2 in the league that year. So it's all relative. Brady technically had to put less points on the board because of his D, but it was waayyy easier for Manning to be able to rack up points. He had in-his-prime Harrison, plus Wayne rounding into his prime, Stokley, prime Edge, I think even Dallas Clark was in on the fun by then. That offense was lethal, used to scare me for the Pats/Colts matchups.

anyone who truly understands football without talking about line movement or being on the sharp side, knows peyton manning is one of the greatest players that ever lived. Any team would be better with manning on it. Even if he isn't 100 percent.

I would sign Peyton Manning for some big bucks in the right situation. The way i figure it: Sell more tickets, Sell more Jerseys, Atttract really good players who want to play with peyton, sell more tickets, sell more jerseys... It is about money afterall right?
