I think in terms of decimals even though I was 'brought up' with UK fractionals.

With that said the US style odds does offer some advantages. The other side (no-vig) of -440 is +440 whereas in decimals inverting 1.227 to 5.40 requires some calculation.

When all is said and done it really just comes down to what you are used to.

decimal is just multiplication of your stake and the answer includes the return of your stake. Nothing is easier than decimal odds because of how easy it is to multiply. American odds use multiplication on +110 and division on -110. Fractional uses division to get back to decimals. The easiest by far is decimal, and that is what everyone should use. I am American so I do tend to switch the odds format to american because it's what I grew up on.

    which odds format

Decimals are easier to calculate for me but Betfredy accepted my bet at 1.73 odds but paid out to me at the odds 8/11. I mailed them and they told me 8/11 was the correct calculation. So the decimal odds were actually 1.7272727
guess I'll have to believe their 'estimated return' is in fact 'the actual return'. Anyone had similar experiences?

Whilst most books will offer you different odds displays, you need to know which odds format they are really using.

Obviously Fred uses fractional odds so in that case your bet was at 8/11 but the closest approximation in your selected (decimal) format is 1.73.

Dividing the return by the stake is one way; but is there a more obvious way to know the which odds format the bookmakers are really using?

yeah, if you put in the bet at 1.73 and the confirmation screen for the wager comes back lower than 173 on a 100 dollar wager they are using fractions. Then they will pay 172.73 or whatever the case may be.

So for Pinnacle, Matchbook and Greek that is US format.

For Betfair and most others I use it's decimal.
That would bother me terribly, because if my screen (decimal) isn't quite 'live' and the sportsbook site is in US format, I might not know if the odds had just changed, and bet it at a worse price than I thought I was getting, as I don't have every US-to-decimal conversion memorized.

that's simply a matter of whether the site has dynamic updates or you need to refresh .. or take care to check the details on the bet slip before finalising your bet

best policy, as I said, is to elect for the format which the bookie is actually working in and you shouldn't experience any problem

My database has always been in Indonesian odds before I even knew there was such as thing, because it was just easier to calculate having the decimal. Makes no difference to me visually but I prefer working in American or Indonesian odds just from having been trained so long to work with those figures, but really when a different format it does not bother me at all.

    Both formats work.

Probability calculations easier with euro though. 1/odds.

Hell no. I use decimal odds predominately but I am often in situations where it pays to have a very good idea of what the American or UK (fractional) conversion is in my head.
