In the wake of Friday’s Paris attacks, French social media users have been posting and reposting a catchphrase by Vladimir Putin, who famously called for terrorists to be “wasted… in the outhouse.” Some say they like this approach better than Hollande's “non-action” calls.
The phrase has become famous and dates back to 1999, when Putin was Russia's prime minister. At that time the country faced terror on a large scale as it was fighting jihadists in the Caucasus during the second Chechen campaign. He was commenting on the Russian anti-terrorist operation in the city of Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic, and the catchphrase became an illustration of his hardline attitude toward terrorists.
"We are going to pursue terrorists everywhere. If they are in the airport, we will pursue them in the airport. And if we capture them in the toilet, then we will waste them in the outhouse. … The issue has been resolved once and for all,” he told Russian media.
Since then the phrase has become Putin's catchphrase and has resurfaced on social media occasionally, especially after terrorist attacks. It was widely re-tweeted after the Boston Marathon bombings in April 2013 and the Charlie Hebdo attacks in January 2014, as social media users called for a tougher approach in dealing with terrorism.
In recent days, French Twitter users have posted: “On ira les buter jusque dans les chiottes,” [We will waste them in the outhouse] – sometimes accompanied by a picture of Putin.
Others contrasted Putin’s phrase with the recent statements by French politicians on Paris attacks, apparently preferring the harsh way to tackle extremism voiced by the Russian president.
“[French Prime Minister Manuel] Valls: “We are going to live with this terrorist threat for a long time.” Putin: “We will waste them in the outhouse,” users wrote.
“We should show our unity and cold blood – Hollande. We will waste them in the outhouse – Putin. We want action, Mr. Hollande,” wrote user @TacusselVictor.
In the 1990s and 2000s Russia was struck by a string of terror attacks, including transport bombings and explosions in apartment blocks, several deadly terror attacks on the Moscow metro and the 2002 Moscow theater hostage crisis that claimed the lives of more than 130 people.
During his second presidential term Putin also faced one of the greatest tragedies modern Russia had to go through: the Beslan school siege. In September 2004, over 1,000 people were held hostage in North Ossetia on the first day of the school year – 800 of them children. Almost 200 children died in the three-day siege.
On Tuesday the Russian military has launched airstrikes against the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa in Syria with cruise missiles from their ships and submarines in the Mediterranean Sea, France’s Le Monde newspaper said, citing a French official.
The information that Russia has struck Islamic State positions in Raqqa has been also reported by a senior French government source, cited by Reuters.
A US official told Reuters that Moscow has conducted a significant number of strikes in Syria using both sea-launched cruise missiles and long-range bombers.
Russia gave notice to Washington ahead of the airstrikes, in accordance with an agreement on air safety, US official said, adding that some of Russian strikes had targeted Raqqa, the stronghold of IS militants.
This is the second time Russia has hit Islamic State positions in Syria from the sea. The first attack was in October this year when Russian warships fired cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea to hit several Islamic State positions in Syria.
On September 30, Russia launched its military operation against Islamic State at the request of the Syrian government. Since the start of the operation the Russian military have destroyed hundreds of extremist targets in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Damascus, Deir ez-Zor, Hama, Homs, Idlib and Latakia.
Earlier on Tuesday France’s defense ministry confirmed that Raqqa was also being targeted by the French military.
"For the second time in 24 hours the French military conducted an air raid against Daesh in Raqa [Raqqa] in Syria," the ministry said, adding that ten Rafale and Mirage 2000 fighters dropped at least 16 bombs.
"Both targets [chosen for the attack] were hit and destroyed simultaneously…Conducted in coordination with US forces, the raid was aimed at sites identified during reconnaissance missions previously carried out by France."
France started launching airstrikes against Islamic State militants in Syria in September. The strikes have intensified following the deadly Paris attacks on November 13 that left 129 people dead. The attacks were claimed by IS militants.
On Tuesday, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian made the country’s first-ever request for military help from all 28 EU members in French operations in Middle East and Africa. Such EU defense cooperation is possible thanks to the 2009 Lisbon Treaty.
"France cannot do everything, in the Sahel, in the Central African Republic, in the Levant and then secure its national territory," Le Drian said.Comment -

While world leaders struggle with the problem of dealing with terrorists, Ramzan Kadyrov has come up with a direct solution: dropping captured terrorists from drones and publishing detailed accounts on when and how each extremist died.
“I suggest that if any terrorists are detained they should be suspended on unmanned aerial vehicles that attack the positions of the Iblis State and then drop them on their accomplices’ heads,” Kadyrov wrote in his Instagram account, which is his medium of choice for communication with the public.
The Chechen leader used the term ‘Iblis State’ to describe the terrorist group Islamic State (IS, previously known as ISIL and ISIS) because he, along with many Russian Muslims, considers that extremists insult their religion by using the word ‘Muslim’ in their name.
Kadyrov also added that in his opinion such executions must be organized without any trials and urged everyone to participate in the fight against terrorism in whichever way they can.
“I am confident that it is the duty of every Russian citizen and patriot of his Fatherland to report any information that could help to identify terrorists and disclose their places of residence,” he wrote.
Kadyrov made his announcement on Tuesday, hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters that the Federal Security Service (FSB) had established that the A231 airliner in Egypt was downed by a bomb blast. Putin also pledged to find and punish those responsible for the attack and all who attempt to help them. FSB Director Aleksandr Bortnikov has announced earlier that Russia was offering a $50 million reward for information on those behind the terror attack on the A321.
Last week Ramzan Kadyrov made an address to Muslims across the world, calling on them to unite and destroy the Islamic State terrorist group. He also reiterated his point that the current Middle-East crisis was masterminded by the United States and other Western nations.
Earlier this year Kadyrov expressed confidence that IS had been created “first of all against Russia” and warned of the threat that the jihadist group and the conflict in Syria pose to Russia’s security. He also noted that the US and other Western nations “spawned” the current terrorist movement in the Mid East in order to distract public attention from numerous problems in the region and incite hatred towards Muslims all over the world.Comment -
