Remember a few years back when the Syrians were committing mass genocide and the west stood back and did nothing?

The result of that was ISIS. Their rise is also a reminder of how Bashar al-Assad's Machiavellian embrace of al-Qaida would eventually come back to haunt him.

The west could've stopped this from happening but chose to turn its back and as a result you have a civilian population deeply disillusioned and dis-enfranchised to the point where they became radicalised and violently militant...
