Wildcard Wednesday... making you the hit of the water cooler since 2011. See why Tiger Woods and Tony Romo are joining forces, and why the 76ers are right on par for January.

As the NFL season rolls to a close, it’s time to realize it won’t be long before Wildcard Wednesday is the only day we are talking about football. But for now, as the NFL rules the proverbial Geno’s Take’s roost, let’s take a look across the gamut of other sports that actually have the balls to schedule games while everyone is busy preparing Conference Championship Week playoff parties. While they do that, you can enjoy this little party platter of other current event on the sport world and their ensuing one liners as that will once again make you the hit of the Wednesday Water cooler…

Tiger and Romo in the Pro Am
As if the PGA wasn’t excited enough to have Tiger Woods playing in his first Pebble Beach Pro Am in exactly a decade, they must be absolutely giddy that he will be paired with his buddy, Cowboy QB Tony Romo, ensuring the Golf season’s rating will start with a bang. And while they were actually paired once before for a single pro-am round at the AT&T National at Congressional outside Washington D.C. in 2009, never have the two paired for four full days of a tournament—although Tiger has been in several other notable “pairings” since then which led his ex-wife to play caddy with his 9 iron.
Regardless, the media will have a field day as cameras will no doubt spend as much time watching these two banter as much as golf. I’m looking forward to the chat where each one talks about what it’s like to be clutch—Tiger can talk about his clutch birdie putt that helped him win the 2008 US Open over Rocco Mediate and Romo can talk about how his inability to clutch of the football on a routine snap cost him a playoff victory against Seattle in 2007. Oh yeah, and Tiger can talk about his how his double clutch putts on 17 and 18 in the Chevron World Challenge allowed him to win his first tournament in over two years while Romo talks about how he’s been double clutching on every pass attempt for the past six years.

Philly is playing like it’s 76

No, that is not a misprint atop the NBA Eastern Conference standings. The Philadelphia 76ers not only have a commanding four game lead at 10-3, but are the only team in the East with a winning record. Maybe there is something to the strike playing to the advantage of younger teams, as the aging Celtics and Nets have only four and three wins, respectively, and neither one has a winning record at home while Philly has yet to lose once in six home games.
Obviously this more rigorous schedule after the strike has affected how sharps like our own Steven Suarez ranks each team but. Regardless of the reason, the simple fact is that thanks to a stiff defense, the Sixers are actually looking comfortable in first place. Then again, this is not anything new to them, as if you check the past five seasons, the Philadelphia 76ers always get their tenth win around mid January.

The Australian Open heads to the third round

For those of you who haven’t been following events on the other side of the world, Italians make horrible ship captains and Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer advanced to the third round of the Australian Open. Of course if you already knew these two won last night, it can only be for one of three reasons—you are an insomniac who was up til 5 am watching ESPN’s live coverage and you need to seek a physician and get some meds; you are a degenerate gambler and you need to seek counseling as there are a bevy of perfectly good NHL games to bet on (which our buddy David Lawrence has nicely broken down for you); or you just like tennis in which case you need to seek a car dealer and buy yourself a Fiat 500 and stop kidding yourself.
NFL picks, breakdowns and more tomorrow.. in the meantime, ask yourself why you’re not following me @genospicks yet.. you get all things SBRforum and so much more…
