dumbass question about laptops and wi-fi connections

Ok, so I am the last person in the universe to get a laptop and try to connect to wireless internet. I get several different networks when I try to connect and they all tell me i need a "network security code" or key.

What are these codes and how do I access them?

Also this computer has Windows 7 which I haven't used before and it doesn't seem to be exactly user friendly. I have to through the control panel to try and connect wireless internet.

Go knock on your neighbors doors and see which one gives you their network password.

You first have to pay for your own internet, then you'll set up a password.

Where are you trying to use the internet? In your house, coffee shop, etc?

If your router is set up properly and you have an internet connection it should work. You went through the steps of setting up a password for your wireless network?

The f12 key is to switch to wifi. Make sure you hit that motherfukkin key

btw OP, if you do have an internet connection you've named it so you should see yours on the list. Maybe what other posters said is true, you have no connection - trying to connect to wifi in your area. Signal would most likely be very weak.
