Floyd's been in a gym since he was two years old. He grew up in a family of fighters. He dropped out of school to fully immerse himself in boxing as it was the quickest road to supporting his loved ones. He was 84-6 as an amateur, got robbed in the Olympics in a match that saw one official resign and is undefeated as a professional. He made mincemeat of Arturo Gatti, Diego Corrales, Ricky Hatton, Zab Judah - the list goes on.
You can attack him for not being the most electrifying stylistically, but he never has problem making weight, doesn't drink, smoke, never underwhelms, and has single-handedly resuscitated boxing. There's a reason he's making $40M a fight. People tune in to root for and against him; the show he created (24/7 on HBO) draws massive ratings and he has personality. You either love or hate Floyd Mayweather Jr as a boxer. He's cultivated a masterful image of himself that sells. He doesn't move when a promoter tells him to, unlike other fighters that have feasted off his leftovers, sometimes defeating them in far less convincing fashion.
Lastly, look at his Compubox stats after each fight. A great boxer doesn't need to get pummeled each fight and swing with reckless abandon to dominate the game. Those who are looking for cheap and violent thrills should watch the UFC.
