Newt is a character, wouldn't mind drinking with him. I supported Obama last time because I was hoping he would be different and work to change the way things are done. But seems his only true passion is to raise taxes on the wealthy, the people that create jobs. I give him a lot of credit for his handling of the financial crisis in his first two years. But his continuing insistence to try to raise taxes at every chance is the wrong medicine to what ales us.

This time around I think we need someone who is not going to tax us into a full blown employment depression.

So being in favor of extending the payroll tax cut for millions and millions of middle class Americans (giving them a $1000-$1500 tax break) which would be paid for by 1% of Millionaires who will have to pay a couple of percent more .. in your eyes means that Obama is "trying to raise taxes at every chance" huh?

wrong and nice try JW but people who bother to take the time to understand it will know it's about how they will pay for it. 15 Trillion in debt remember. Always the same ole nonsense ... put it off and blame the top few % who already pay 40% of all the taxes ... rather than cut spending and pay for it that way. The common sense way. The reasonable way. The right thing to do way. Should they wait till the debt hits 20 Trillion? 50 trillion? What a leader this president is! Hip hip hooray! Let's vote for 4 more years of this nonsense. Sad.

We’re overtaxed right? Especially under that confiscatory socialist Barack Hussein Obama, who the Wall Street Journal called “a determined man of the left whose goal is to redistribute much larger levels of income across society.” Umm … not so much. This from the AP:

    Taxes too high?

Actually, as a share of the nation's economy, Uncle Sam's take this year will be the lowest since 1950, when the Korean War was just getting under way.

And for the third straight year, American families and businesses will pay less in federal taxes than they did under former President George W. Bush, thanks to a weak economy and a growing number of tax breaks for the wealthy and poor alike.

For those of you keeping score at home, federal tax receipts this year are expected to be about 14.8 percent of GDP. By contrast that figure was 17.5 percent in tax cut warrior George W. Bush’s last full year in office.

And as Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen, who flagged this, points out:

Of course, this is only looking at federal taxes, and doesn't reflect state and local taxes, but a USA Today analysis found last year that if we include everything -- federal, state, and local taxes, including income, property, sales, and other taxes -- the percentage of personal income that's paid in taxes is still at its lowest level since 1950.

As Michael Ettlinger, head of economic policy at the Center for American Progress, said at the time, "The idea that taxes are high right now is pretty much nuts."

Keep these statistics in mind when the great budget debate starts in the coming weeks and we start hearing about Obama the deranged tax raiser again.

JW, goldman sachs was Obama's larger campaign donor last election and Wall Street has donated even more to Obama for 2012. More than all the GOP candidates combined. Why is this?

it's simple. get you spending under control, get the economy creating jobs again and then you can ask to any US tak payer to pay more taxed maybe. Because you have shown you are competent with the money. Until that point, Obama has no reasonable reason to expect anyone to pay more.

But the Republicans are right now championing for millions and millions of us pay more by blocking the extension of the payroll tax cut. Obama wants us to pay less ... the Republicans want us to pay more ... or rather - the Republicans will only let it pass .. as long as the Democrats agree to spend several Billion dollars on an oil pipeline ...

(So are the Republicans really even a little bit interested in reducing the deficit ? ... It would appear not .. however I'm sure that plenty of Republican pockets will be lined if the $6.6 Billion pipeline gets the go ahead) .. and once again - big business gets to dictate US policy.

    http://www.tarsandsaction.org/spread...s-keystone-xl/

    Key Facts on Keystone XL

Energy Security: Tar Sand will not Reduce Dependence on Foreign OilKeystone XL will not lessen U.S. dependence on foreign oil, but transport Canadian oil to American refineries for export to overseas markets.

Keystone XL is an export pipeline. According to presentations to investors, Gulf Coast refiners plan to refine the cheap Canadian crude supplied by the pipeline into diesel and other products for export to Europe and Latin America.

Proceeds from these exports are earned tax-free. Much of the fuel refined from the pipeline’s heavy crude oil will never reach U.S. drivers’ tanks.

Reducing demand for oil is the best way to improve our energy security. U.S. demand for oil has been declining since 2007. New fuel-efficiency standards mean that this trend will continue once the economy gets back on track. In fact, the Energy Deptartment report on KeystoneXL found that decreasing demand through fuel efficiency is the only way to reduce mid-east oil imports with or without the pipeline.

Gas prices: Keystone XL will increase gas prices for Americans—Especially Farmers

By draining Midwestern refineries of cheap Canadian crude into export-oriented refineries in the Gulf Coast, Keystone XL will increase the cost of gas for Americans.

TransCanada’s 2008 Permit Application states “Existing markets for Canadian heavy crude, principally PADD II [U.S. Midwest], are currently oversupplied, resulting in price discounting for Canadian heavy crude oil. Access to the USGC [U.S. Gulf Coast] via the Keystone XL Pipeline is expected to strengthen Canadian crude oil pricing in [the Midwest] by removing this oversupply. This is expected to increase the price of heavy crude to the equivalent cost of imported crude. The resultant increase in the price of heavy crude is estimated to provide an increase in annual revenue to the Canadian producing industry in 2013 of US $2 billion to US $3.9 billion.”

Independent analysis of these figures found this would increase per-gallon prices by 20 cents/gallon in the Midwest.
According to an independent analysis U.S. farmers, who spent $12.4 billion on fuel in 2009 could see expenses rise to $15 billion or higher in 2012 or 2013 if the pipeline goes through. At least $500 million of the added expense would come from the Canadian market manipulation.

Your notion that the government must somehow pay for a tax cut is absurd. It's not the government's money to begin with therefore, by giving the people their money back, it does not have to be "paid for". Love how you neocons try to spin everything your way. Pretzel logic only makes sense to those who are insane.

Wrong ... the Republicans are holding the cuts hostage ..and are only willing to pass it if the Democrats agree to spend $6.6 Billion on a pipeline ...

At first the Republicans were 100% against the extension ... until they were made to look stupid by Obama who pointed out their hypocrisy .. now they have realized that they cannot continue to get beat up so badly by withholding support for the extension of the cuts .. they have instead come up with a pan to pander to big oil in exchange for their votes agreeing to an extension.

In effect .. they will only agree to support the extension if they can in turn put in a $6 Billion piece of PORK for the Big oil companies. ... not so worried about the debt all of a sudden are they .. strange how quickly they can flip-flop on that isn't it ?

I am not sure you are correct JW. You are talking about that pipeline that Obama is putting off make a decision on until after the election as to not offend the environmentalists and the thousands of jobs it will make? This is the most shovel ready project there ever was and he just sits on the fence. Didn't he have a jobs bill? The payroll tax cut again is the same, kick the can down the road another year and let someone else deal with.

Yes .. the pipeline that will bring shale oil from Canada down to US refineries to be processed so that it can then be exported ... the one that will reduce capacity and therefore increase prices of US gasoline to the US consumer .. yep .. that's the one that the Republicans are pushing for .. the one that will cost $6.6 Billion dollars ... that's the one ...

This whole pay-roll tax thing is just complete bull shit, and is for political points. it is doing nothing to help the economy, it comes down to a few bucks each week that the poor will just spend on some extra lotto tickets. its not like they are saving up for a down payment on a house, or to hire someone.

and this is anther tax, that will probably never go away. because no one likes to raise taxes, and not extending it, its basically a a tax raise.

everyone needs to pay higher taxes, 50 percent pay no federal income taxes. the top 1 percent pay 25 percent.
the rich needs to pay more, the poor needs to pay more. we need to close the loop-holes, we don't need a whole structural changes, that will cause more problems then solutions.

spending is right, we spend a lot. but a lot of that esp. for the states is the pensions and retirement funds, the dems/unions agreed to years ago. there was a whole uproar in wisconsin when they asked the union folks to contribute to their pension. that is bankrutping cali. it was bankrupting wisconsin in till walker came in and change everything up.

but really i don't love rommeny or ginrich. they both are blah to me, i would like rommney if he was rommehy of old, and was moderate. now he is just some right wing nut. the main problem is the way we elect people in this country. we have two primaries dems and reps. that is it, and both run way to the right and way to the left.
