Is Duke over hyped and overrated?

    Numbers don't lie

Duke is 271st in the nation in rebounding.
They don't have an enforcer type glass cleaner underneath.

Duke is 247th in the nation in assists.
You know who had the most assists for Duke last night?
    Curry, with three.
    THREE !

Duke turns the ball over much to much.

Sure the guards can shoot, but as far as running the point, the guards suck.

Curry leads the team with 22 assists in 8 games. That's deplorable.
What is even more deplorable is Curry has 18 turnovers.
18 turnovers and 22 assists is not going to get it done.

Rivers has 18 assists and 18 turnovers.

As a matter of fact, the entire Duke team has more turnovers than assists.

Duke is shooting 68 percent from the free throw line as a team.

Oh sure Duke had success on neutral courts in the early tourneys, but they looked like deer in headlights in a true away arena.

Until proven otherwise, I will fade Duke away from Cameron Indoor.

Duke suffers from not having a point guard. Curry running the point is stupid since he is a shooting guard.

They are always overhyped but will be right there in the end once the teams gels more. At least a 2 seed come tourny.

Kelly, Dawkins and Curry were no-shows.....hard to be competitive playing 5 on 2 and the other team shooting close to 60% to boot.

The most frustrating part of watching this team is their defense was so terrible last night. Not boxing out and giving up easy offensive rebounds.
That Duke team last night had 2 good players (Rivers and Plumlee) and a bunch of scrubs.

Duke has a cushy schedule and will look pretty good in December and January. North Carolina on February 8 will be their next debacle.

I couldn't believe how bad they looked last night. Dumbest bet ever.

I lived the Redmen experience with Berry, Jackson, Mullin, Wennington and Glass.

If being the most successful program hands down over the last 25 yrs makes you "overrated & overhyped" guess you're right

It was one early season out of conference game in a hostile environment vs arguably the best team in the nation that couldn't miss.
Relax, Duke is a top 8 team & as usual will likely prove it when it matters most.

They don't have a point guard.
They don't have any real rebounders.
They are not hitting their free throws.

The 2011-2012 Duke team is flawed.

2013 Duke very well may be a force again, not this year.

a year or 2? they'll have a completely different team in 2 years...

of coarse they overrated (its duke), as mentioned they have no true point and pg makes the world go round..im sure coach k will figure something out and their best ball is still ahead but every gm ive watched them play this yr i walk away thinking this team is lacking in several key areas, mainly toughness and pg..

its hard to tell where they are at. its a long college ball season, and to look at the over-all stats now is very short sited. like the poster above said they just completed a lot of games in maui and this is their first game back. osu was well rested and ready to prove a point at home.

osu was just great last night, everything was falling for them.

Austin Rivers will turn into something special over the next few years. He is a great player and wouldn't mind seeing him play the point instead of curry. He is young so i expect Turnovers from a young duke team.

Nobody who scored double digits a game came back so now they have to start fresh.
They lack a BIG man humblee needs to get bigger not in hight but in size. He played well last night at times but sullinger got the better hand in last nights event.

Obviously last night as well the home crowd definetly made an advantage. The runs that Ohio State went on in the first half were crazy. They also did make some unbelievable shots. Some calls just went there way.

Duke will come back and prove themselves this year.... it is still early and with the way rivers is playing and with the some of the chemistry i saw in the first half i still think duke is a top 10 team.

That may be but he reminds me of a derek rose in a way. Great First step knows how to get to the basket and knows where all his players are on the floor. Im not saying he would be the greatest point gaurd but curry is a shooting gaurd he needs to be on the wing. Rivers can create shots for Curry by drawing double teams drive and kicks. I think it may be a good look for the blue devils.

One of the top 4 college programs of all time, all they do is win year after year. There is at least 296 other college programs that would like to be overrated and overhyped like DUKE.

First of all, I posed the question "Is Duke overrated this year"?

    Since you mentioned 'all time'

UCLA is the best program of all time
Indiana has a better history than Duke.
    Kentucky too.

    All time programs?
I put Duke in middle top ten with the Kansas's of the world.

First of all I was responding to leetrapper how said Duke was always overrated and overhyped.

Indiana has been relevant since Bob Knight.

How many schools would kill to be overrated and overhyped as Duke as been under the Coach K era? It's hard to climb the mountain and even harder to stay on top of it.

    4 National Championships
11 Final Fours (most since 1984–85) as well as five in a row from 1988 to 1992
20 Sweet Sixteens (most since 1984–85) and nine straight from 1998–2006
    27 NCAA tournament berths
79 NCAA tournament wins (most ever)
    12 No. 1 seeds
25 conference titles (12 regular season, 13 tournament), 10 of last 13 ACC Tournament Titles
    12 30-win seasons
    26 20-win seasons

Top 4 to 6 program of all time.
    I can not debate this.

I am a UConn homer, UConn like Duke starting this season are both overrated and over hyped.

UConn, will be an elite 8 team at the end, but right now, the core are under classmen, with Lamb being the leader.
Boatright just played his first game, Drummond is going to be a very good one, but he's a freshman like Boatright. Olander has improved 100x since last year, but right now, they need to all come together, I will be the first to tell you UConn was not a #4 team in the nation before the first tourney game.

Just like Duke did not deserve their #6 ranking preseason either.
No true point guard, no rebounding, etc, etc,
Will they work it out, like UConn will work it out this year?

More than likely, yes, but as of right here, right now, Duke, UConn, and a few others are overrated.

Nobody is saying (well, not me anyway) Duke is not a history, all time great team.

I think the point guard position is dying at Duke. Not including Kyrie since he only played 11 games before that Scheyer ran the point for two years (actually controlled the ball well) and now Curry running the point. Nolan Smith was the point but got moved to shooting guard in favor of Scheyer and now Duke has three shooting guards starting. Is Coach K trying to change the game? it puzzle's me why the lack of a true point guard for Duke knowing their history of great guards.

    "Tainted?" Please explain.

Now, for last night. Duke faced an athletic team that always gives them problems. No answer for Sullenger. Knew going in that was an issue, but 4 guys scoring 17+ plus shows a total breakdown.

Rivers is probably another one and done, but he is no Kyrie Irving. Dawkins and Curry are spot shooters who wear it out if open but cannot work to opens spots. Kelly is a 6'10" wing player. Totally outclassed last night. Miles Plumlee is a waste. Mason needs to run the floor, he has no game with his back to the basket.

Duke will be OK. Probably lose 6-8 games before it is over with. Not too many programs out there that would not take that every year

Got to go all the way to # 28 to find U Conn.

UCLA leads in Championships with 11.
    Kentucky 7
    N Carolina and Indiana 5
    Duke 4
    U Conn and Kansas 3

Looks like Duke and Kansas both are much better than the "middle ten".
