What do you do to ensure you don't bet above your means?

Over the past year I would guess I pick between 55-60% on my picks but of course I still manage to go busto..I am a good capper in my mind but struggle badly with BR management...Any ways or practices that you do to eliminate betting and losing too much? I try the 5% of the BR rule but still seem to lose focus after a week or a few beats...I hate the idea of giving up gambling because I know it can be profitable but might have to lean that way if I cant control myself...thanks for the input.

Just force yourself to bet 2% of your roll on every game and watch that bankroll slowly grow

(If I could follow this advice I would be rich)

only bet sides and forget about totals..
you are better off at ATS then Moneyline..
if you do consider Moneyline, then only play the dogs..

Why forget totals? You are just as likely to get a total right as you are to get a side right...dogs are the hardest picks to get correct

There really isn't much you can do to ensure that you don't over bet.

It is a matter of discipline and that tends to be something you either have or you don't. Most bettors will start to chase after 3 or 4 losses and as your own experience shows you, it tends not to work out.

Never chase! never money line a big favorite! Never go "dam im down 300 today I'll put 300 on the late game to break even! If you do like a dog take the points and do a small play on the money line! When your hot don't slow / lower your bets - play hot!

All these things I have done many times and now after 15 years and a few busted bank rolls am finally putting it into practice and been rolling.

Oh ya and never ever like a game and bet it +7 lets say and it goes to +11 say I loved it at 7 I really love it at 11 and put more on it. Stick to you money management.

Mr. Peepers - "Over the past year I would guess I pick between 55-60% on my picks but of course I still manage to go busto..I am a good capper in my mind...".

"I hate the idea of giving up gambling because I know it can be profitable but might have to lean that way if I cant control myself."

You're on the right track with the 2nd quote. Stay away from gambling - it's not for you.

No, but that's the right answer.

Never break your discipline. Bet 2% of your roll per play. Never more. Otherwise you will go broke, even if you have a winning%.

Warren Buffett turned down a $2 golf bet because he thought the odds were against him. Buffett obviously doesn't care about $2, but he never breaks his discipline. That is the key to success.

You're the one who first mentioned leaning towards giving it up.

""Over the past year I would guess I pick between 55-60% on my picks but of course I still manage to go busto.."

Anotherwords you don't keep records - another indication of a loser.
Why are you guessing at your win %, instead of being able to know exactly what it is?

"I am a good capper in my mind..."

    Exactly.

Again - Gambling is not for you - for multiple reasons.

And your post reveals that you are (at least somewhat) aware of this.

Just bet betpoints if you're not good at handling money...it's almost the same.
