The Nevada Gaming Control Board has approved American Wagering Inc.'s Leroy's application that lets state residents place sports wagers from their iPhones, a company executive confirmed Thursday.
The approval makes American Wagering the first U.S.-based gaming company to have a free sports betting application available in the app store on iTunes.
"This means we are available through all the major carriers," said John English, senior vice president business development and public affairs. "We now cover 90 percent of the smartphone market."
English said the application is free to download and use, however, customers have to open an account before they can bet.
The Las Vegas-based company is about to submit its application for the iPad for regulatory approval. The company's iPhone app will now be filed tested over the next 30 to 180 days, that lets regulators evaluate the system's efficiency and security.
American Wagering operates 77 Leroy's Horse and Sports Place Inc. outlets and self-service kiosks on casino floors statewide. In April, William Hill PLC acquired the company for $18 million.
"With our new kiosks and mobile apps, this has really changed our business," English said. "We have gotten so many requests for an iPhone app, we expect this to be very successful."
Betters for the last six months have been placing wagers using their BlackBerry and Android smartphones. The company also developed an application to be used on Android tablet computers.
