    Is the BYE Week overrated?

And overhyped? They always talk about the gmae being "so fast". I was watching the Pats-Jets game and they were talking about Anthony Hernandez (spell check) and how he's been out a couple weeks, and that he looked slow and was not adjusting to the speed of the game. The BYE week has always been hyped as some great thing and teams and players are rested...of course banged up players have a chance to rest and get healthy for after the bye but wouldnt you think that coming off a BYE is hurtful? You are away from the fasted paced action for almost two weeks....you play one Sunday and dont return for 2 weeks...other teams have momentum and personally I think the ol "coming off a bye" theroy is overrated and misused when handicapping games. Thoughts?

yes its true, on the one hand players get a chance to rest and heal their bodies, but on the other hand teams lose momentum and get a bit rusty

I guess it depends on the situation you are in, if your team is hurting then you need the bye week to get some people healthy

if your team is healthy and has momentum then the bye week may hurt you

another advantage for the buy week is the coaches have more time to study film with the players and form their strategy for the game, and of coarse get to see their opponent in action just one week before the matchup

i agree especially early teams with some injuries. The bye week isn't overrated at all. Teams coming off a bye week getting healthy players back are going to come out strong.

It depends on which team. Some teams are great out of the Bye, some are not.

Definitely overrated unless a team literally has 3-4 players that are nursing injuries that need more than a weak to heal/recover.

It's a case by case basis, some coaches excel off a bye, some can't win and some it makes no difference. A VERY nice situation is winless teams with at least 4 losses are 22-3 ATS off a bye since 1995.

It's not a bye week; it's an off week.

    Carry on.

Hope defenses around the league can use the bye week to improve - need to start getting some stops

23-0 ATS is obviously significant, guess its true that it helps teams that are struggling.

So basically, Miami should be free money this week at +7?

Might as well put your mortgage on the Dolphins this week.

Will be 23-1 after Rams get annihilated, but Miami looks good for 24-1.

The Dolphins are know to play traveling than at home.

Rams and Dolphins are on the trend. Maybe make a 2 team teaser on both teams.

Miami always plays the Jets tough, I think the Jets have only beaten them once since Rex Ryan became coach despite having the better team every year.

Good thread. Lots of good points.
I actually normally love Miami + points vs the Jets in this spot. Something about this situation, though, really bothers me. Miami and the Jets is always a tough game and normally a fun one. They've played pretty decent football so far, with nothing to show for it. At some point it's gotta give. The Jets meanwhile, have been pretty lackluster and pretty down. Everything SCREAMS Miami +points in the game. Anytime it's that obvious, something is f'n wrong and my brain hasn't parsed it yet. Maybe I'm overthinking it. If teams with 0 wins and at least 4 losses getting that many points after a bye wasn't so 'perfect', it would make my brain feel at ease. Haha. I still think Miami is the play. The Rams? I'm still on the fence - but I'd rather take the points than lay them in that spot.

I think Eagles will lose coming off a bye this week. Patriots will win coming off a bye though.
