Guys who consider themselves normal tippers: Do you tip for pickup?

Ok I don't mean the guys who sit down in a diner and don't tip or the guys who don't tip the pizza guy. I mean guys who consider themselves to be "normal" tippers. If anything I have always considered myself to be a very good tipper when I am pleased, and average when I am not.

Here's my dilemma. I have never tipped for pickup because I don't feel it's warranted. I always tip for sit down or delivery food and I tip very well as I do understand this is how they make their money. If you order pick up food do you tip? If so, what %? I have been doing pickup more and more with this local place, I'm pretty hooked on their surf and turf on Fridays, I like to wind down the week with it. I don't want to be known as no tip guy though, the girls there are cute and aside from that I just don't want to be that guy. I want them to think of me more as a Zukkerberg, always dressed like a college kid but always ordering the top of the line shit, and I want them to respect me and to desire my business.

Anyway, what's your stance on tipping for food you are picking up?

When I pickup, I usually just get the bill to a round number...like say $13.75 to $15.00.

I don't tip for pickup, unless its one where you drive there but sit in your car and they bring it out to you.

One of my roommates sometimes works the pickup window at the restaurant he works at (big chain). He doesn't make much because the employer expects people to tip, even if just a little. He does slightly better than servers for base pay (I think he gets minimum wage) and relies on tips for anything above that.

I wouldn't expect a big tip, but rounding up to the nearest dollar plus $1 isn't unreasonable IMO, depending on the size of the order. Anything under $50, that's more than enough.

    Just my .02

It really depends on what type of establishment it is

    Picking up a pizza at a pizzeria-no
picking up a call in order for breakfast at a diner-yes-8%
Picking up a dinner order from a nice place-yes-8%

If a waitress is packing your order than it takes him-her away from the customers eating there who are tipping
Thats the way i usually roll

That is the way to roll.
When I worked in a bar, I used to blow all my cash tipping other bartenders. On days we had off a would go out, it was like a contest: whoever left biggest tips ha biggest dick. Now that I no longer work in the industry, I realize how much of a waste it is. If your ordering a steak dinner take out, probably should leave a tip. But if I'm at Panera and some beached whale has a cup with tips written on it, the only thing I'm leaving is my load in that cup

i like to tip when i have a lot of money. especially from gambling. when i win big at the casino i tip everyone including the dealer, cage cashier, even the cashier at the deli when i get some food to go home. on same days i've even tipped the shuttle bus driver and have thrown some chips to other players at the table who are losing.

i'll give the dealers anywhere from 25-50 depending on how much i win and i'll give the cashiers and other ppl like 5 bucks

i figure i better give those ppl some money because the next day when i come back there i'm gonna lose all my money and be broke. so better to give some of it away before that happens

I'm a little bias here, cause I did Pickup's in college for PF CHangs... Yes you should absolutely Tip for pickup, there is some work involved believe it or not... Putting the orders together is work believe it or not.. For pickup the chefs are no longer plating your food, so its all done by the server...

I was living in Boca Raton at the time, huge Jewish community, so I don't need to tell you that I didn't get many tips... Made up for it though by cutting deals with the cooks, then not quoting orders, and charging half price if I was paid cash, then pocketing the cash... It was a nice little scam for college kid. RObbed that resturaunt blind.

Hell no. Do you tip at Subway? Do you tip at Dunkin Donuts?

It would be like tipping the 7-11 clerk when you buy one of the cold-cuts they have made....Just b/c it involved some type of work, it doesn't necessarily deserve a tip. I only tip is someone is serving me, ie cutting my hair, serving me food by driving it to my door etc.....Are you really being served when someone rings up your food? You don't even know if the person you're paying at the register had anything to do with making the food.

Fck a tip for a pickup and fck anyone who thinks I'm a stingy bastard for not tipping. They make their money on the mark-up of the food they sell. By my patronizing their joint, they are making their profit. End of story.

Furthermore, I don't know why Americans generally have some sort of complex about tipping. BTW, I am an American. Tip anyone and everyone who you feel deserves a tip. It's ridiculous how American society has basically categorized who should get a tip and who shouldn't. Oh, a waitress should get 15% of the bill whether or not the service was good. Anything less and you are automatically pigeonholed as being Scrooge McDuck. However, the guy at the fast food joint works for minimum wage but he shan't be tipped. If I'm at a restaurant and I have to ask for my drink to be refilled everytime does that waiter/waitress deserve 15%? Fck no! But, we are somehow made to feel that we must leave at least 15%. Fck all that!

You realize that the checkout girl can't jerk off on your food right?

If I go somewhere frequently I always tip about 10% which can vary depending on the change. If it's a place you go a lot they might give you a little more grubb or ask if you want a soda...something like that. Same premise as giving a hotel clerk $20 to get an upgrade on a room.

i never tip for a pickup ever either but it might have cost me some tasty greek gyros after years of service

My favorite gyro shop has sent me out the door with a piss poor gyro for the last time and they have been voted best in columbus for years. I always got the feeling they didn't like that I never tipped on pickup but i always had good face time with their servers; unfortunately they aren't the cooks.

You go somewhere enough you know when you are getting the item or if its been cooked an hour ago. Either way these gyros usually blow anything else out of the water but these past few trips they have sent me out with dog food.
