Carl Crawford could have caught that ball...

Slide feet first to make a catch to keep the winning run from scoring? Lay out dude!

He may be the new Buckner. Everyone is over looking this because of all the excitement. If he didn't dive he could have thrown out the runner at home. Made a half ass dive. Odd.

I disagree. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt that he knows how to catch a fly ball better than any of us. He had a bad year but he's had a hell of a career. He'll be back next year. A-rod had a down year his first year in NY as well. It happens when these small market guys go to the big cities.

The correct play on the ball was probably to let it drop. It drops in and he picks it up, the runner is dead, if he goes. At the very worst, the runner is at third and you have closer on the mound that only blew 4 saves all season.

In the heat of the moment, he thinks he can catch it. The correct way to make the catch is to slide. Why? For the exact thing that happened. You have a play at the plate. If the ball bounces favorably, he has a shot at making the throw.

Diving is an all of nothing play. He misses it, game over. He muffs it, game over. He traps it, game over.

Everyone needs to calm down and not look at the play in hindsight. Yes the runner scored. It probably would have scored regardless of how he slid or dove. The only right thing was to let it drop and have an 0-4 guy come up to bat.

Learn how to play the OF correctly, and you won't sound ridiculous, whining about the end result.

Yeah, but that statement isn't hindsight? Like I said, I'm not whining, I had no skin in the game. He couldn't decide whether to try to catch it or let it drop when it mattered the most, and did a half ass foot first slide that reduced his chances for the catch and reduced his chance to throw him out if he had just fielded it standing.

I disagree. It wasn't a half ass slide. It was legit. He just made the wrong decision.

Also, it was ruled and is a hit. There was no error made. Just the wrong decision.

Futher, if he makes the throw, then it all of a sudden becomes the right decision. Just saying.

Crawford was positioned to make a play on the ball in the heat of the moment. Granted a guy making the kind of money he does should have made the correct play and let the ball drop. This same ball gets misplayed all season long. However there was a ton on the line. I am not a Crawford or Sox fan but this type of stuff happens very often. Guy had 432 thoughts going through his head, processed the wrong one and acted on it. This mistake falls in line with the season as a whole for Crawford.

nobody is talking about the top of the 9th when boston had runnurs at the corners with no outs and didin't score, thats where they lost the game.

nobody in here is blaming the loss on Crawford, just critiquing the way he played the ball. I think he made the right play on the ball he just didn't make the catch. A few more inches and he catches the ball. INCHES.

As for why they lost, well, there's no one reason. But they played tonight like they have been playing all month. They're just not playing good ball as of lately and it cost them a playoff spot. Had they won tonight and the D-rays lost, I'm pretty sure Boston goes out in the first round. If I were the Yankees I would much rather have been playing Boston. They should've just finished off the D-rays when they had the chance. I hope like hell the D-rays knock them out of the playoffs this year and make them regret losing that 7 run lead. But I doubt TB gets by Texas.

He should have caught the ball. Either that, or play the ball in front of him and keep the runner at 3rd. It looked like he hesitated when the ball was hit, otherwise he probably would have been right on top of it.

Hes one of the best athletes in the game and should have dove all out for it, and ended it right there. Awful season for him, and he sounded scared sh1tless in the post game locker-room questioning.
