    Geno's Takes for September 28 2011

Wildcard Wednesday... I know it’s football season and I tend to focus on that but I guess on this last day of the baseball season with two spots up for grabs it couldn’t hurt to talk a little of our national pastime—although let’s be honest—when it comes to passing time, baseball easily has fallen behind Football, porn and probably the Jersey Shore.

    AL WILD CARD
As a native Philadelphian transplanted in New York—see we’re a week in and you’re getting to know Geno—there are so many reasons to root for the Red Sox to finish their monumental collapse tonight, but the fact of the matter is that I am rooting for them to make the post season. The reason is simply that as a fan of the game I know that the people of Boston are as great a bunch of fans as the people of Philly and New York; which is more than we can say about Tampa bay. The Rays have more trouble putting people in the seats than the people of Boston have putting the letter “r” in a word. Did you know the part of the entrance exam to Harvard is simply to pronounce the name of the school. Only three “southies “ have attended the college in its entire history.

    NL WILD CARD
Speaking of collapses there’s another one about to happen on the senior circuit as—after Atlanta fell to the Phillies last night while the Cards pounded Houston—the braves have seen their completely squandered away their nine game lead in the wild card race and are now tied with the Cardinals. I haven’t seen this awkward of a turnaround since I was watching Michael J Fox’s audition for Dancing with the Stars. It shouldn’t matter who wins the wild card as the Phillies have gotten back on track and need to realize that the only team that can beat the Phillies are themselves. While the Braves continue to get pounded than Bobby Cox’s wife ever did, the Phillies biggest problem is choosing between Roy Oswalt—who is only 9-10 on the season after his win last night—and the hot hand of rookie Vance Worley. You can’t miss. It’s like having to choose between Playboy’s Shannon twins and saying I’ll take the fat one. Meanwhile the Braves rotation has fallen off drastically in the past month and their lineup has more holes to fill than the Playboy Mansion.

Two out of Three ain’t bad
Matt Kemp has been the one bright spot in what has been an otherwise dismal and embarrassing season for the Dodgers who have made more headlines in a Delaware Bankruptcy court than they have in the city of Angels. Last week he pulled to within three points of Jose Reyes—who picked a terrible year to final give a shit—for the NL batting crown. But as I come to this morning surrounded by betting slips and burrito wrappers i see that in order for him to win the triple crown he would need Jose Reyes goes 0 for 4 and Ryan Braun 0 for 2 and then he would just need to go 8-8. And I'm not sure what would be harder to do, get eight hits in one night or watch the Dodgers for 20 innings.
