    Congress may OK online gambling

    http://www.nypost.com/p/news/busines...wp7dmh0L6dqQuM

Americans appear closer than ever to being able to gamble online -- as a bill aimed at legalizing Internet casino gaming could find its way before Congress by the end of the year, people close to the matter tell The Post.
The confidence over the federal legalization of online poker and other games comes as momentum in Washington builds behind the effort.
“I think there is becoming a feeling in Congress that this is something that needs to be regulated and be done,” a source close to the discussions said. “I believe there is a possibility a bill will pass towards the end of the year.”

Sen. Jay Rockefeller last month in an effort to win a debt ceiling extension proposed legalizing Internet gambling saying it could raise an estimated $41.8 billion over 10 years, and an estimated additional $30 billion for states, along with 17 other ideas

None of this proposed legislation would help sports gambling in the U.S. It has nothing to do with expanding sports gambling outside of those areas and methods that already exist. It primarily deals with online poker...

Yes, but it is a first step. Also, if games are included US players will at least be able to gamble on casino games and know that they are not fixed. Let's face it online casino games are fixed unless a legit government regulates them. Therefore, US players are hard pressed to find a fair casino. Also, once that first step is taken sports betting can't be far behind. It is a win/win thing except for the crazy social Republicans hell bent on controlling "vices." We tried that before--remember!

They ruined the horse racing industry with there 30% take out

You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning 10 times than winning one of those rigged lotteries.

Then to top it all off...........if you defy the million to one odds against you.

You get to pay massive taxes.

they don't necessarily have to pass the sportsbetting part because by just making the casinos legal online it will open the floodgates for funding methods again as they won't be able to keep up with what's what...

My only thing...and I am one of the hopefuls, is that the timing has to be right because if this fails, it's going to be eons before it has another shot.

Online sports betting will never be legalized. There are so many laws written in cement that would have to be repealed and so many huge forces that will make sure it will never happen.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken this legislation strengthens the UIGEA on sports gambling. It will cripple offshore sports gambling.

One thing I know for a fact is that online sports gambling will never be legalized in the USA. And I think they will move to get rid of it for good. Possibly with this legislation.

They are going out of there way to make sure people understand that online poker and online casino is totally different than online sports betting, and online sports betting is unacceptable.

I have written this 100 times here. People need to educate themselves about what is going on. They are looking to end online sports gambling. Any legislation passed is bad news for sports bettors. I guarantee you that.

No, they will continue to look the other way with regards to sports betting. A big reason that sports are popular on tv is that a large section of the population bets on games. Without that added interest, televised sports will lose a big audience. And that is something the advertising corporations will not want to see.

In fact, I would love to see the tv audiences for sports before and after the UIGEA. I would expect a drop, and if that is the case the new voices in favor of legislation could be directly tied to that.

Of course, they'll want to win a few public victories. Same as in the drug business. Give the public the impression that they're on top of the battle, but make sure that their noble cause won't cut into their profits.

Legalize this, so online casinos created in America can get taxed which helps the government.

As long as it's illegal, nothing is being taxed, which does not help the government at all.

many interesting comments here. I worked for over 20 yrs as a congressional staffer, and agree with some, but not all comments as they relate to Washington and political parties. I can tell you one thing that has helped the chances of this legislation passing: Poker players organized and got behind it. The same cannot be said for sports gamblers...and with the NFL/MLB/NCAA all lined up against us, there is little hope until we do put together a massive, unified front. I think that while they're probably no greater than 50-50, the chances are better that the ban on sports gambling in land based casinos will be lifted, simply because the issue eventually will be decided by the courts...

Hmmm, so let's see. The social conservatives fought violently to pass anti gambling laws and now they will side for internet gambling. I don't think so. Social conservatives will never, ever vote yes on any type of gambling. Fiscal conservatives the kind that think, once in a while may. But conservatives generally are not the friend of vices or what they consider vices. They gladly tell people what they should and should not do.
