Part 1 here - http://www.sportsbookreview.com/forum/players-ta...ip-report.html
It has been raining heavy since late afternoon so instead of hanging out in a hammock I've decided to write a little longer summary while I sample what I think is some cheap Panamanian vodka ($2 Kosako Vodka Importado anyone?)...
Day 3 – My polyamorous marriage plans for the couple of Austrian girls I lucked into sharing a room with seemed to have fallen through as they left at 4:00 AM as scheduled. Given I had now had the room to myself I slept in till around noon when the owners came to tell me I had to check out or pay for another night.
The bus station was about 7 blocks from my hostel so I decided to walk rather then waste a dollar or two on a cab. The directions the girl at the front desk gave me had me going about three blocks to the main street before coming back so I decided to ignore these as there seemed to be an almost direct path on the map. This (and getting lost due to any regular street signage apparently being unnecessary in San Jose) brought me through a pretty rough area but (after stepping around a couple of passed out locals taking an afternoon siesta on some scraps of cardboard) I eventually arrived at the bus station covered in sweat from lugging my bags around blindly down San Jose streets in midday heat to an area that was in a only slightly better part of downtown then I had just traversed.
From there I took the bus to Montezuma which was rather uneventful except for the scenic drive and a ferry ride (improved by a heavy thunder storm) crossing the Gulfo de Nicoya. Upon arriving in Montezuma the cheap guest house where I planned on getting a room was full but I got lucky at a hostel down the road where I splurged and got a private room at $10 a night versus $8 for a dorm room... From there I walked around Montezuma for awhile (as it only takes about ten minutes) and watched a couple fire dancers on the beach before quickly passing out after spending the day traveling...
Day 4 – After sleeping in again (and having fun encounter with a crab under my bag which I initially mistaken for a scorpion as it hurriedly scampered away under my bed) I ate a cheap breakfast (eggs, rice, sausage, bread, and pineapple smoothie - $4) and walked to the waterfalls outside the town.
After realizing that the trail wasn't exactly a side walk stroll I talked up a local (through his broken English and my non-existent Spanish) who tried to get me to hire him as a tour guide while I caught my breath and had a cigarette before the upcoming hike. Although I declined these services it turned out this was not his only business activity.
From there I hiked (which was a pretty decent workout for my fat ass), saw the waterfalls, swam, etc. Not realizing that it was not a smooth hike there I only brought a small bottle of water and wore cheap sandals (which I had to shed at times to cross wet rocks and paths through the water of the river). About 3/4th of the way back I ran out of water and one of my sandals broke when I slipped on a rock. After hiking the rest of the way barefoot (and rebinding the staples holding the straps and buckles of my sandal together with a flat small rock) I chatted up an old guy who ran the small dirt lot used for parking where he also lived in a the hut. After inquiring about where to buy water he instead macheted me up a coconut, which also served as my lunch. After hanging out and talking to him for about an hour or so (and after re-meeting the tour guide from earlier) I walked back to Montezuma...
Due to fairly heavy rains since late afternoon I haven't really done much this evening except for eating dinner, typing this up, and, so far, only some minor drinking...
