    Whats wrong with it...

Guys like George Soros get Obama elected , knowing he is a socialist idiot with the business experience of a teenager, and then short the dollar and make billions...

it's Ok though, we wont have a country soon... but we'll have free health care!!!

The ban on short selling is only on bank and other financial stocks. France only for 15 days.

borrowing the stocks, usually with leverage (debt). essentially, it is a bet that the stock price will fall in the future (it will be cheaper for you to repay what you borrowed)

Some experts say it is not free trading then and then you have a false market

It helped Greece out alot last year didn't it? Government intervention into markets is NEVER a good thing. Yes it made a lot of people cover shorts in Euro financials today when the rumor started and yes it will buy these banks some time with their stock prices buoyed, but they need alot more than just a couple of weeks. How credible were the government-mandated stress tests just a month ago that gave all these banks a big thumbs up when they begin to crumble at the first onslaught of stress? They were pure bullshit......and people don't lie and pull cover-ups over positive developments.

I can smell bank nationalization in the near future for Italy, France and Spain (to name a few).....This ban on shorting is not good news 4 anyone...Shows a lack of confidence in the private business market...

Short sellers are an integral part of the market and should not be limited. And remember, at some point they have to cover their position(s).

    What's the big deal?

The US ban short selling on financial stocks before ... If the U.S.A could do it, any country could do it

It was wrong too and accomplished nothing. Bear, Lehman, Countrywide, Wachovia, and all the rest were going down regardless.

Why not ban long buying? Why all the discussion about the uptick rule on short selling but nothing about the downtick rule on long buying? Nothing but hypocrisy.
