I'm trying to figure out the point of even having a 401(k) now.

I've had one for about 5-6 years and it's basically been like stuffing money in a mattress -- at best. I can't imagine anyone's 401(k) looking very good if you spanned the past decade.

Assuming you even made a 1% gain since you began your 401k and you have any type of company match ur about 45-50% +ev from the money being under the matress. 28-35 % in tax savings + any growth youve managed with any matching contributions. Also if u stuffed money in the mayress whoz to say u wudnt have gambled it all away by now?
