I read one time that when the Mafia used to run the pick three, they paid out 700 to 1 on a 999 to 1 chance. 30% house advantage. The government runs it now and pays 300, for a 70% advantage. Wouldn't surprise me if this happened with sports betting.

Democrats in this country don't seem to have a problem with gambling in general. Nevada has a powerful Democratic Senator. Republicans, on the other hand, pander to the self-righteous.
Sports betting, on the other hand, is a different animal. The World Court declared the USA's refusal to legalize internet gambling, including sports betting, as illegal. I heard that on CNBC. (So the USA is a rogue state. Surprise!)
Anyway, some powerful sports lobbies resist legalized sports betting on moral grounds. This goes full circle to paragraph one.
I always believed in standing and fighting. Our constitution even encourages it. But I see no realistic way to crack this nut. To paraphrase an NRA slogan: "If you outlaw sports betting, only outlaws will bet sports." So I'm an outlaw in a rogue state. WTF.

It's one of the only things I actually enjoy doing, even though I suck at it and rarely win, it's still fun to to gamble on sports. I guess I have to just practice acceptance here because maybe it wont change

Topgame, Emily and jj all gave you correct answers. Nationalized sports betting is not something government wants to get involved in. The money they make would far outweigh the headaches they would encounter. Look at all the soccer and tennis fixing scandals in Europe. Imagine the allegations and investigations in the states. Online poker and casinos will eventually happen, but sports......not likely.

Republicans didn't seem to mind it much either (Ask G.H.W Bush's Drug Czar), was just the Christian Right and Bill Frist's personal hard on that made him attach the UIGEA to a Port Security Bill the night before Congress broke for election break. Antigua has won rulings against the US and our government told them to screw off.

The difference between sports organizations here and overseas is that the number of overall viewers here trump anything any other segment of the world can produce. When people are watching games here because they have money on them, the leagues and their broadcasters can't do any better.

It is the NCAA "amateur" games that the government would be concerned about.
No bill for completely legalized federal sports gambling will ever include college sports.

It's always cool to be the one who claims that a conspiracy exists so you will never be considered naive. The fact of the matter is that these professional athletes make too much money to put the fix in and secondly, with 22 players on the field it would take more than one person to guarantee a fix. The referees could be bought but they are vetted heavily and some of them are connected politically, retired judges, etc.. They are not your average run-of the-mill joes.

Emily, you try too hard to look for conspiracies in everything. I'm sure you think the moon landing was staged, 911 was perpetrated by us in concert with Israel and I wouldn't be surprised if you told us North Korea was going to attack us..........ohhhhhhh, that's right, you already did.

I'm just gonna be straight up with you guys im sure some feel the same way. I have posted about this before and yes maybe 1 out of 100 games are fixed however, it's not every game by any means. They do it for fan revenue and such. I went to a sportsbook in Mexico last year and every bettor there thinks every game every sport is fixed and they bet accordingly. It;s kind of funny to me. But it is simply not possible.
