Defensive position players are overvalued. Your best defender is your pitcher. Overall it starts and stops there. 8 guys behind him, he is dealing with guys that hit the ball 20-30% of the time, and 90% of out are hit directly towards position players.

Mets had to make this move, I don't see how any Mets fan can be upset by this move. This contract is gone, Beltran will be gone soon, and hopefully they'll have some extra cash to give Reyes a nice 6 year deal

This is a spot on, tremendous post.

Up the middle (C,2B,SS,CF) defense is critical, a good up the middle makes a decent pitcher good, a good pitcher great.

Look at the 1984 Tigers, they had one of the best up the middle defense in my generation with Parrish (C) Trammell (SS) Whitaker (2B) Lemon (CF)

You know how many would be singles up the middle that were turned into double plays by Whitaker and Trammell?

Dan Petry doesn't win 18 games that year without that defense, especially Milt Wilcox winning 17.

Look at the big Red Machines of the 70's.
Their up the middle defense had no equal with Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion, and Geronimo

Pitchers best friend (especially ground ball pitchers) are his second baseman and shortstop that can turn that would be single into double plays

Asa Mets fan I was hoping more for K-Rod to go over to the Yankees along with their solid fielding back up SS who can't hit a lick....and in return the Mets could land Jesus Montero and a pitching prospect. But if the Brewers can supply us with a decent hitting catcher prospect and/or a solid pitching prospect I won't be too bummed out.

You don't need a hitting catcher, Paulino can rake, so can Thole, Ike Davis doesn't put up enough power numbers as your typical corner infielder should, Citi is not built for David Wright's bat, will he ever return? How many hammys does Reyes pull a year? Santana is through, Beltran is gone, Bay is one hit a game guy........

You have an OK staff, but it's like 5 #3 guys, who's the stopper?
Who's closing? Neato? Is it in his blood?

I disagree. Its pitching for me. Those behind him are all secondary. I watch the Giants achieve success with one of the worst defensive infields for a winning teams. If your pitching is competent yo will be fine.

If the Brewers played 5 inning games, absent of relief pitching, they would have an improved record.

WTF are you talking about? trade Wainwright? for a fukkin short term closer? Cards dont even really need a closer, same as mil they could really use a left handed specialist (which mil still doesnt have), and if anything they could use a starter to put McClellan back in the pen where he is best. Why the **** would they mortgage their future trading one of the best sp around for the end of this season when what Brewers just did isnt scaring anyone. with all their bats getting healthy stl could basically stand pat and still compete in this div, odds are they do a little something but trading a guy that is one of the best that they have at a very good price for years is asinine. If they did anything big it would be dealing Rasmus but it would take a very good offer and they arnt actively shopping him. Get a clue man.

doesnt really solve any of your teams problems, just window dressing. K-rod sux against lefties like the rest of your pen and who is to say he is happy in a setup role? maybe he is great looking for a new deal or maybe he pouts and is terrible, either way your team still cant win a road gm to save their life, have a terrible shortstop, and have no one at end of gms to get a lefty out.

Mets might as well trade reyes and beltran now. No point in delaying the inevitable. Getting rid of K-Rod definitely makes sense financially, but from a purely baseball perspective, they basically just gave up on the season.
