    Willingham OUT at Washington

About time, this program needs a total overhaul

SEATTLE (AP) -- Washington coach Tyrone Willingham was forced to resign Monday, effective the end of the 2008 season.

During Willingham's regular Monday news conference, he and athletic director Scott Woodward announced Willingham would step down at the end of the year.

When asked if this was his decision, Willingham said flatly, "No."

Asked if he ever considered resigning, Willingham added, "No, it's just not in my makeup."

The embattled Washington coach fell to 0-7 Saturday after a 33-7 loss to his former employer, Notre Dame. Willingham and Woodward had been in discussions for eight days over Willingham's dismissal, but they said no decision was reached until Monday morning. The team was in classes at the time of the announcement and only a limited number of players knew of Willingham's pending departure.

"The obvious is here," said Woodward, seated next to Willingham.

Willingham has been under fire for being unable to turn around the Washington program. He is 11-32 overall in his four seasons with the Huskies. Washington currently has a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season, tied with North Texas for the longest in the country.

Woodward has said he did not want to change coaches during the middle of the season. But he said Monday's announcement ends speculation of what is going to happen with Willingham and lets the team focus on the final five games.

"We didn't win enough football games. That's it," Willingham said after be dismissed for the second time in four years, following his firing at Notre Dame in 2004. "Hopefully, we've done all the other things right (and) it's a good strong program for someone to jump into and do things."

The end of the year is too late. The Huskies needed to get a new coach in there now so they can start recruiting without any issues.

Most major coaching candidates won't be available until the bowl season ends. Ty won't give up either because I'm sure he will want to continue coaching at another program.

I heard Lane Kiffin was the leading candidate to replace him.

He'll get another job not sure if he wants another head coaching job but it may be in the MAC or WAC but he will get another chance. Ty is well respected in the coaching community.

He's already scorched the earth at UW. Not only has he effectively stopped recruiting, but he also has been burning redshirts of players (who wanted to redshirt) in the 4th quarter of 30 point blowouts.

He went to the Rose Bowl once at Stanford, in a year where the Pac 10 was even worse than it is this year. He went 8-4 that year and managed to lose to San Jose St. He is a terrible, terrible coach.

Went to 4 bowl games(including the Rose that you stated). He also had the most wins as a coach for Standford since '71. Had a nice thing going...thats why Notre Dame came calling. If he doesnt take that job, he is probably still coaching there with good job security.

Ty wears out his welcome after awhile. Ask Stanford fans what they think of him and how he left the program. The man is a fraud. And all of this talk of his advancement for black coaches in nonsense. Not only does he set back black coaches' opportunities with his incompetence and antics (with friends John Saunders and co) but he never has any black coordinators. Given that you almost always need to be an offensive or defensive coordinator before you can become head coach, Ty is an absolute joke for the advancement of black coaches. Contrast that with the racist Notre Dame whose coordinators are both black.

A lot comes down to expectations....Huskies were once a national power. In my back yard we have Cal. Cal alums, most, are so grateful for $2.5 million Tedford because he takes program to a bowl game every year. Problem is that Tedford will never go beyond the Holiday Bowl. I can't get too worked up about the college coaching revolving door, for either the players or the coaches. A healthy Jake Locker might have bought Ty another season.....

Ex-Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has expressed interest in the opening at the University of Washington just hours after the school announced Tyrone Willingham will not return next season.
The University of Washington is a great job, one that Im sure a lot of people have an interest in, Kiffin told The Associated Press while watching Monday Night Football at his home in the Bay Area.

Ty Will is a legend in his own mind, period.
