Police, gunmen open fire on South Beach; three officers injured

Three police officers are in the hospital early Monday morning in the wake of two shootings on South Beach, including one in which police opened fire.
Miami Beach Det. Jenny Velazquez, a police spokeswoman, confirmed that two officers were receiving treatment at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
A Hialeah police officer was also injured and was being treated at Mount Sinai, according to Miami Beach police.
The extent of their injuries was unclear.
One person was killed in the shootings, according to sources, but Velazquez said that is not confirmed.
Five people in addition to the officers were hospitalized, according to police.
With a number of officers from different police agencies — including the Hialeah department — helping patrol the Urban Beach Week crowds on South Beach, Velazquez said details remain sketchy.
"Everything is very cloudy right now," she said.
Velazquez said the police-involved shooting happened just before 4 a.m. in the 100 block of 15th Street.
A second shooting, which Velazquez said happened too recently to have much information, erupted in the 1300 block of Washington Avenue.
Police were working two additional crime scenes related to the shootings: one at 15th and Drexel Avenue, and another at 14th and Collins Avenue.
Police shut down several blocks in the heart of South Beach to motorists and pedestrians. Two blocks on Collins south of 15th Street, as well as the area near Washington Avenue and 13th Street remain off-limits.
A YouTube video posted early Monday apparently captured one of the shootings. The two-minute video, shot from several stories above, opens with the sound of several gunshots and a dark-colored vehicle zooming down the street before stopping at an intersection. “Don’t run to the window,” a man warns his female companion off camera as sirens and screams are heard from below. “He was shooting people from inside the car.”
About one minute into the video, at least a half dozen people — apparently police officers — approach the stopped car. A barrage of bullets rings out, and one officer can be seen approaching the car shining a flashlight into the driver’s side window.
Police say additional information will be released at a press conference later this morning.
