    soccer question

first off i know nothing about soocer or betting on it for that matter. i was wanting to know what level teams are on. for instance in MLB you have AAA,AA,A and so on. In soccer how do these teams match up? say a team from MLS playing a team like liverpool? or team usa playing one of these club teams from europe? might be a dumb question, but i really have no idea. thanks

    Liverpool = MLB
MLS = Single A...or maybe rookie league.

Man Utd, Inter or Barcelona can beat any world cup winner. It's like saying that Detroit Red Wings can't beat Team Canada.

Talent-wise the MLS is not even close cause it doesn't have the financial capability yet. For example Barcelona beat New York Red Bulls 6-2 a few months ago and they didn't even go full-throttle.. The fact that the best MLS players are leaving to good European (though not top-level) clubs is a good example.

As for the best club against the World Cup winner- that's an interesting question. For example Chelsea and Barcelona have virtual dream teams.

And this is true. Even the lowest clubs in any league can have brilliant home records.

    firedawg,

Not a dumb question at all!

Problem is that these days within the Premier League the difference between the best and worst team is already 2 goals and the worst Premier League team is still about 3/4 of a goal stronger than the best MLS team.

I think Chelsea or Man Utd (I think they are the two best clubs in the World right now) would beat Brazil or Italy 60% of the time (assuming a winner was needed). I'd take Spain as a slight favorite though in a head to head match.

Don't sell short Italian A League, they will hold their own also with Premier League, the thing is so many nationalities mixed in with all these clubs so your not talking about all homegrown talent.

The best group of players from one country can be a host of like 4 or 5

    Brazil
    Italy
    Germany
    Argentina
    Spain

Then a host of other close

Brazil have more talent than any club team, maybe Spain too. Such a huge number of quality players to pick from.

The difference is club teams are more efficient, because the players train together daily, and play 60-70 games a year. National teams have only occasional training, and only a handful of games. This is why national teams that can actually get months training/playing together before big tournaments can do so well - see Greece winning Euro2004, or S Korea in WC02. Nowhere near the talent of the others, but they were true teams - most of the rest are merely collections of individuals.

Just read the forum if you want to learn about capping soccer. You'll find out soon enough who know their business. I don't bet it a lot anymore, but it's not hard to make a killing during the two big tournaments. Here's a Euro 08 thread with some basic stuff:

So you are saying Chelsea , Man U , Liv , cant beat Italy ?

You forget the WC winner squad is made out of guys in the best clubs , so therefore you but THE best club against them and chances are Italy will get blown out

Italy suck now, they've all got too old :-)

Look at Spain though: Torres/Villa up front, Fabregas/Alonso/Xavi/Iniesta/Senna midfield, Silva/Joaquin wingers, Ramos/Marchena/Puyol at the back, Casillas in goal. What club team can match that in talent? Man Utd only, I'd suggest - match them in attack, better in defence, worse in midfield.

Man Utd would probably still beat them due to playing more as a team of course.

Italy is leading their World Cup qualifying group.

    http://soccernet.espn.go.com/tables?...q.uefa&cc=5901

Their eyes are on 2010. Don't confuse qualifying soccer with tournament soccer.

I would ignore the FIFA rankings, where Italy is in 2nd spot, because Argentina, at number 7, is probably the most talented team in the world. FIFA rankings use latest results, regardless of strength of opponents. Messi could easily be the star of 2010. And there's no way that Germany, Croatia, or Holland are better than the present Argentina side. Holland is breezing through the qualification for the World Cup, but for them that typically doesn't bode well for the tournament.

If we look at it this way ... Argentina stands in 3rd position right now ... below Paraguay and Brasil.

Anybody think Liverpool could defeat Argentina? I say most likely it wont happen.

However .... would Liverpool defeat Paraguay? I say most likely it would happen

I agree with Roguey ... FiFA rankings are a joke.

Club teams and national teams never meet, outside of a very rare friendly. Why are you folks so intrigued by the question who might beat who? What could be the practical value of an answer to such a pointless question?
