    Taking Newton #1 = Stupid

Haven't we learned our lesson yet with all the fast black QBs in the league that never amounted to anything??? Even the great Mike Vick needed about 10 years and jailtime to become a decent passer

I realize Newton is a world class athlete, but the QB position is wayyyyyyyyyyy more mental than physical and newton has never played in an pro system with pro reads and throws. He's gonna struggle for 2-3 years and then MAYBE (and it's a huge maybe) develop into a decent passer

it's a huge risk for #1 pick. IMO the only play this year is marcell dareus at #1 pick. You're pretty much guaranteed to get a dominant defensive lineman with him

I like Dareus more as a player too but the price tag wont be justified. Plus, with Jimmy Clausen at QB it's hard to pass up a chance at a future star at that position.

There isn't a QB out there worth taking in the first round.

In fact, I'd consider Andy Dalton above any of them (other than maybe Gabbert).

    These teams never learn.

What indicates he'll be a "future star" as an NFL QB? I don't see it at all.

Gotta go with style over substance in the first round, though....

If Jimmy was my starting QB I'd take a shot with Cam.

FTR, this argument can be made without bringing race into play. Being black has nothing to do with it; Ryan Leaf wasn't black.

There isn't a QB that is worth being the #1 player taken.

If I were in Carolina's spot---trade down, take a player like Patrick Petersen, and then look for WR help early in the second round.

I would take Patrick Peterson 1st overall. Hes definitely the best prospect overall, and will be an elite corner in the NFL. Whether he takes it up to the level of a Revis or Asomugha is dependent on if he works hard enough, but I would bet money he becomes a pro bowl corner in his career.

However I think Cam Newton will be taken 1st overall.

The reason Cam is speculated to take the #1 position is due to popular demand... and I totally agree it has nothing to to with RACE, that's just simple minded thinking and not even having facts to back up what is being said about any player.
I think that the first round should be Marcell Dareus or even V.Miller the Panthers shouldn't make a mistake and go for a QB so early in the draft, but I guess it's all due to the fact that they know that if they don't grab one in the first round the wont have any more option when they get the next pick in rd 3. If I were in the Panthers position I'd actually be looking at someone like Blaine Gabbert, I think he'd have a better chance in with the Panthers offensive playbook.
But we'll see what Carolina does today... I just hope they don't jump the gun and make another mistake like last years QB Draft.

    you're nuts

Young didn't run the ball nearly as much as Newton did in college and he had way better accuracy and mechanics as a QB in texas. Newton is an even more raw version of Vince Young

So what are you saying? That black QB's who are fast don't have the mental skills to play the game?

I think that was basically the premise, which is false.

Could've easily made the thread about Cam Newton. I don't care what color he is -- the guy should not be a first round pick.

    it's not about race

it's about the fact that these guys just play an athletic based game in college and high school, and never develop the mental skills to be a QB in the NFL (you can't be a run first qb, even Vick turned himself into a pass first qb in order to become a great QB)

the game is just completely different in the NFL. You gotta be able to anticipate and throw the ball accurately into the small windows

how many years did it take Vick to become a great passer??

I see Newton as a bigger Young with worse mechanics and accuracy

it isn't a smart pick because the types of things cam excelled at in college will get him put in a wheel chair in the NFL. You can't run into these linemen/linebackers and expect to come out without some serious bruises. Cam is used to being one of the biggest guys on the field, but now he is just going to be average.

Glad my Bucs can not worry about the Panthers again now.

Meh. I think Peterson, Green, and Dareus all have more potential. All 3 could be top 3 at their positions within 5 years, not so much for Cam
