Most blood clots come from trauma to the lower extremities. Once found, patients have to be on blood thinners for 90 days, then they are essentially cured. Blood clot breaks down, go about life as usual.

In his case, blood clot returned absent of further trauma to the extremities. So he fits in category B, patients with a genetic clotting abnormality. These patients have to be on a blood thinner for life to prevent DVTs (deep vein thrombosis) or PEs (pulmonary embolism).

He's at low risk while on the blood thinners. Can live a very full long millionaire life. Problem is with the risk associated with contact sports with medically thinned blood. Risk of traumatic internal bleeding is too high for any doc to sign off on a return to NBA play. There is therefore no way he's playing again I don't know why it's dragged on this long.
