Honduras U20 football team under investigation for match fixing

Irregular betting patterns have triggered an investigation after a shock 3-0 loss to Fiji.

The Honduras u20 national team are being investigated under suspicion of match-fixing. This comes after a shock 3-0 loss to major underdogs Fiji in the under 20 world cup tournament held in New Zealand.

The match was flagged up on FIFA's 'Early Warning System' which seeks to flag up suspicious matches before kick off by using a number of methods including, but not limited to, monitoring betting patterns across the world:

“EWS operates an individually developed system for monitoring and analysing the global sports betting market. With this system, EWS specialists analyse the changes in odds and betting offers, track market liquidity and obtain an overview of all the latest changes in the market.”

An unnamed FIFA official in New Zealand who wished to remain anonymous due to pending investigations confirmed after the match, that the Honduran team is being investigated and the next steps will be taken in regards to possible sanctions.

Users on social media across the world were stunned at Fiji's historic win, while many also remarked at the bizarre lack of effort from the Honduran team and how they did not appear to want to score. Honduras won their previous match 4-3 against Uzbekistan.
