I think Sharp was referring to the context of rich....in the 80's early 90's noone had a smartphone, 6000 channels on Directv and a flat screen TV but today those luxuries are considered necessity. 'cash rich' families had a Zenith with 3 channels, a Miami Vice or bag phone with antenna attached to the sports car and so forth. Today even someone living in the projects will have unlimited text, free-cheap internet, and an offbrand 42 inch flat screen....so its all about perception.

You CAN survive on low wages.....you just can't thrive. And lets be honest, service types - food servers and hair stylists claim less but get benefits and use the cash on PS4 and such. Rampant.
