    QB Rotation:

    FRIDAY'S GAMES 8/8/08

Philadelphia Eagles - QB Rotation: Donovan McNabb, A.J. Feeley, Kevin Kolb.

RB Brian Westbrook is battling a viral infection. RB Correll Buckhalter is working with the first team. The addition of Lorenzo Booker to back Westbrook means former Penn State star Tony Hunt is fighting for a roster spot.

Secondary thin. Cornerbacks Asante Samuel (hamstring) and Lito Sheppard (groin) remained sidelined, and it seemed unlikely that either would play in the preseason opener Safety Brian Dawkins (left knee) is hurting while Rookie safety Quintin Demps left Monday practice with a sore Achilles' tendon.

Pittsburgh Steelers - QB Rotation: Ben Roethlisberger (1 series), Charlie Batch (2-3 series), rookie Dennis Dixon, rookie Mike Potts (see below).

QB Ben Roethlisberger will start. Coach Mike Tomlin said Roethlisberger will "probably not" play more than a series before giving way to veteran Charlie Batch against the Eagles. Tomlin said he plans to use all four quarterbacks in the preseason opener, following Batch with rookie fifth-round pick Dennis Dixon and free-agent rookie Mike Potts.

Because WR Santonio Holmes and veteran WR Hines Ward likely will not play more than a series, rookie wideout Limas Sweed should get plenty of playing time against the Eagles.

Four players already have been ruled out of the game -- Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu, Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton, safety Anthony Smith and tight end Cody Boyd. Polamalu and Hampton remain on the physically unable to perform list.

Secondary thin. Troy Polamalu sustained a minor hamstring pull before the start of training camp and is on the physically unable to perform list.

Rookie Rashard Mendenhall, the team's No. 1 draft pick, is among three players who are scheduled to return kickoffs, along with newcomer Mewelde Moore and WR Willie Reid. Moore, signed in free agency from the Vikings, will return punts with former Pro Bowl returner Eddie Drummond, who was signed last week, and former Olympic skier Jeremy Bloom.

One player who will not return punts against the Eagles: Wide receiver Santonio Holmes, who has been given some work there during training camp. Tomlin said it's possible Holmes will get an opportunity in the second preseason game against Buffalo Bills in Toronto.

Seattle Seahawks - QB Rotation: Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Charlie Frye, Dalton Bell.

The team is trying to find a halfback rotation with Maurice Morris and new additions Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. The passing game is looking for someone to fill the flanker role while Deion Branch is recovering from a knee injury. Rookie John Carlson is trying to work his way into being a factor at tight end.

The offensive line has been reshuffled with the addition of Mike Wahle and a back injury to Chris Spencer has the team turning to Steve Vallos, a college tackle in 2006, to play center.

Secondary and offensive line dinged up. CB DeMichael Dizer tore an ACL and will need surgery.

WR concerns: WR Deion Branch is six months into what is typically a nine-month rehabilitation following reconstructive knee surgery. He likely will not be ready for the season opener.

Minnesota Vikings - QB Rotation: Tarvaris Jackson, Gus Frerotte, John David Booty, Brooks Bollinger.

Quarterback Gus Frerotte (back) was held out of pratice on Monday but says he's OK. QB Jackson is handling the blitz drills better than he did last year.

Coach Brad Childress said the game plan will consist of "our base plays" adding, "we are not going to try and trick anybody."

Childress has dramatically altered his approach with this team. Rather than overwork his players with day after day of hitting, Childress has allowed his team to practice in shorts and shoulder pads early in camp, unlike the last two years.

San Fran 49ers - QB Rotation: J.T. O'Sullivan (1st Q), Alex Smith (2nd Q+), Shaun Hill (mop up), Drew Olsen.

QB J.T. O'Sullivan was named the 49ers' starting quarterback Friday against the Raiders. O'Sullivan will start the first quarter and will possibly play into the second quarter. Smith will play the remainder of the first half and probably into the third quarter before Hill finishes out the game.

Mike Martz is the new offensive coordinator. Martz is intent on making TE Vernon Davis a focal point of the offense.

QB J.T. O'Sullivan has gotten plenty of reps. He looks like the most game-ready QB, thanks to the head start he had from working as a backup in Mike Martz's offense last year in Detroit.

WRs thin: The 49ers rested WR Isaac Bruce Monday and, with Bryant Johnson hobbled a little and Ashley Lelie limited because of a calf injury, youngsters Hill, Morgan, Cam Colvin and Dominique Zeigler saw a lot of action.

ith the retirement of defensive tackle Bryant Young and with defensive tackle Marques Douglas signing as a free agent with the Buccaneers, the 49ers have looked to Justin Smith and rookie Kentwan Balmer, who was the team's first-round pick out of North Carolina, to shore up the defensive line.

Oakland Raiders - QB Rotation: JaMarcus Russell, Andrew Walter, Marques Tuiasosopo, rookie Sam Keller.

QB JaMarcus Russell said his sore right elbow would be "ready to rock 'n' roll" by Friday's game. QB Andrew Walter missed another practice this week with a tired arm, but coach Lane Kiffin said it is "not a long-term concern." Keller and Tuiasosopo are newcomers to the system.

Offensive line concerns: New left tackle Kwame Harris is still learning the new blocking scheme; Returning right tackle Cornell Green struggled to contain edge rusher Derrick Burgess in practice, while second-year tackle Mario Henderson remains a work in progress.

Nose tackle hurting: NT Gerard Warren (thigh) and backup Terdell Sands (knee) ailing.

An illness that started with cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has spread to several other players and team employees, including safety Jarrod Cooper. Asomugha received a second day of IV treatment.
