Sam Darnold's days as the hopeful future of the New York Jets franchise have come to a conclusion.

The 23-year-old former No. 3 overall pick will now take on the hopes of the Carolina Panthers' organization going forward.

Darnold has been traded from the Jets to the Panthers in exchange for a 2021 NFL Draft sixth-round pick plus second- and fourth-round selection sin the 2022 draft, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday afternoon. The Panthers soon thereafter confirmed the acquisition of Darnold.

The Panthers, who still have 2020 starter Teddy Bridgewater on the roster, were the sole suitor for Darnold and had been strong suitors for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, but had transitioned to Darnold, Rapoport added. Darnold now takes the starting reins for the Panthers, while Carolina will look to trade Bridgewater, Rapoport reported.

Meanwhile in Gotham, the Jets, who took Darnold out of USC with the third pick in the 2018 draft, have now officially moved on from the former Trojans standout with all eyes of the prize of the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, where they'll presumably take their next hopeful franchise signal-caller.

Darnold's three-season stay in New York offered flashes of promise, but was overshadowed by uneven play and the chaos that surrounded him during the last season of Todd Bowles' stay as head coach and two years of tumult under Adam Gase.

Around The NFL will have more on this story shortly.

Jets trade QB Sam Darnold to Panthers, New York gains multiple picks for former first-round QB

Darnold is heading to Carolina for multiple draft picks

The Sam Darnold era in New York has officially come to a close. With the NFL Draft just weeks away from kicking off, the Carolina Panthers have acquired the former first-round quarterback in a trade with the Jets, as reported by CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones. The Panthers have since confirmed the trade and noted that they are sending a 2021 sixth-round pick along with a second and fourth-round selection in 2022.
Darnold's future with the Jets was in doubt once New York slotted themselves into the No. 2 overall pick at the 2021 NFL Draft. There, they are positioned to select one of the top quarterback prospects that make up a rather deep class at the position. Our own CBS Sports NFL Draft expert Ryan Wilson has the Jets taking BYU signal-caller Zach Wilson, who has been the presumptive No. 2 pick throughout the pre-draft process. This deal that now sends Darnold to the Panthers all but confirms that the organization will be going with a quarterback at that top spot.

    Good stuff, Tony:

    1) You have any faith in Sam reviving his career?

    2) In that Jets situation, HOW MANY rookie qb's really succeed?

    3) See u at the tables, buddy.

    Typical Jets stupidity.

Throw a lamb to the wolves, throw a lamb to the trash

Watch lamb be a major force in NFL for 20 years.

They had to trade him, but damn they didn't get much. Figured there might be more interest, but most teams have either moved on or are planning to draft. Zach Wilson will be the Jets QB.

Jets did very well. They now have 21 draft picks in the next 2 years. 10 of which are top 3 rounds! How the hell you gonna keep Sam around when he has shown so little. The Jets are few years away from really competing.
What you gonna do pay Sam if he has a decent year next? Please stop
Reset the qb and build up the team thru the draft. Joe Douglas did well consider Carolina was the only team made a offer.

As opposed to going war wth Sam coming off his rookie deal? You wanna pay him if he is somewhat ok wth these crazy qb contracts? Jets made the right decision. Let's face it Sam was not that good in college either. Guy was definitely not worth holding onto

    Hey Chucky

I think that Sam will be fine moving forward
You can't just blame him for his problems with the Jets. Maybe if they would have given him some players to throw to, and guys to protect him, he could have been alright.
then add in Gase who was the " QB whisperer " , so everyone thought. lol

But I almost agree with the trade because, how do you throw a QB like Darnold at a new coaching staff?
what do you tell Saleh? here you go, now go fix Sam, he's your starter and your problem now.
and if he can't fix him, now you wasted another year and you have to start all over again next season.

I just don't think it's fair to the Head coach, and the team.

    See you at the tables

You are right. Not even close, his last season he led the galaxy in turnovers. The Jets fuked themselves hard even drafting him. At least they got something for a guy that is no better than a backup.

You make good points that I can't counter.
Feeling here is they are giving up too soon on Sam, but resetting might be the way to go too.

Draft Wilson..reset the qb contract structure.
You now have 21 draft picks next 2 years. 10 of which will be top 3 rounds. Not sure how anyone can can say a bad deal for Jets. They need the picks get better players on both sides of the ball.
Now it's on Joe Douglas the gm 2 draft the players along wth the new coach who everyone thinks be good.
They now have the draft capital build a team and move forward.

Jury is still out for Darnold. There was no offensive line. He got pounded. Fresh start could work wonders. Time will tell.

Sf obviously offered the Jets the same deal as the Dolphins. Once the SF trade was made it was clear the Jets taking a qb at 2. Told you that before

darnold has talent. the jets did not give him much. as someone who has watched a lot of his games, the one thing i did not like was his decision making. granted, he had very little time in the pocket on some plays. however, there are other plays he had time and just made bad decisions or was off in the timing. he did not show enough when you have an opportunity to draft a QB now.
