NFL Player News - Week of 7/13/20

NFL | Lamar Miller close to full strength Fri Jul 17, 12:16 PM
Free agent RB Lamar Miller (knee) is close to making a full recovery from the torn ACL he suffered in the 2019 preseason. He will need teams to bring him in for a medical exam before he can sign.

    Giants | Aldrick Rosas charged
New York Giants PK Aldrick Rosas was formally charged with three misdemeanors in the Superior Court of California Wednesday, July 15, for his arrest in June. Butte County (Ca.) Deputy District Attorney Glenn Jennings filed a criminal complaint on Wednesday that charged Rosas with reckless driving on a highway, hit and run and property damage, and driving with a suspended or revoked license due to a previous DUI.

Buccaneers | Ronald Jones has better hands
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones said he has been working on his hands this offseason in order to contribute more in the passing game in 2020. 'My hands are better,' Jones said 'Just catching more passes, every day. Like 300 a day on the JUGS (machine), and I've been working out here with high school and college quarterbacks and working with (Tom) Brady, so I've caught every kind of ball you can imagine. I'm ready for that challenge.'

Patriots | Sources still think Jarrett Stidham starts
New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham is still believed to be in line for the Week 1 start by several members of the organization, according to talk radio host Scott Zolak Monday, July 13. 'I believe Jarrett is going to be the starter from the people that I talk to, the people that I trust: the players, people tied to the team, team captains,' Zolak said. 'The way they speak of Jarrett Stidham and the work he has put in.'

Ravens | Mark Andrews intends to play in 2020
Baltimore Ravens TE Mark Andrews intends to play in 2020, despite having Type 1 diabetes, as indicated by recent comments he made. 'We've got a big year coming up. I want to be able to do a lot of things, and ... just being able to help this team win is exciting for me,' Andrews said during a Zoom call with the Children with Diabetes Foundation.
Footballguys view: This is good news for Andrews fantasy teams, but this situation could change at any moment and there is likely to be at least a few players who sit out the season because they are in higher risk groups or otherwise weigh sitting out as the better choice than playing.

Chargers | Two competing for RB2 with LAC
Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson and fourth-round pick RB Joshua Kelley will compete for the second running back spot. The team is still high on Jackson, who averaged 5.1 yards per carry on 79 rushes, but he only played seven games due to injury last year.
Footballguys view: Jackson has proven that he can perform in the NFL, but he isn't as well suited for short yardage as Kelley and could still give way to the rookie on any goal line snaps that don't go to Austin Ekeler (which could be a lot of them). Jackson is the favorite to win the #2 job if he can stay healthy in camp, but if he gets hurt or misses time this year, Kelley could pass him and never look back. Either could be fantasy relevant with the Chargers looking to go more run heavy in the wake of the Philip Rivers era.

Lions | Matthew Stafford sharp from the pocket
Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford recorded a league-leading 82.7 QBR from inside the pocket in 2019, posting a 66.2 completion percentage, 8.8 yards per attempt and 17 touchdowns to three interceptions.
Footballguys view: Stafford was producing at a top 10 clip last year, even as high as 5th or 6th depending on scoring system. His back injury ended his season early, so he is available at a deep injury discount.
    Link to story
    Matthew Stafford player page

Seahawks | Russell Wilson efficient in 2019
Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson's 6.2 touchdown-to-interception ratio in 2019 was the best among quarterbacks who finished in the top 10 in passing yardage, and he was the only quarterback to rank in the top five in QBR on throws inside and outside the pocket.
Footballguys view: Wilson did this while having his attempts jump by almost 100. He remains underrated in league and fantasy circles and could easily be the #3 fantasy quarterback this year. Wilson is worth a pick in the top 5-6 quarterbacks off of the board.
    Link to story
    Russell Wilson player page

Bears | Allen Robinson has not heard from team
Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson said he has not been contacted by the Bears this offseason about a possible contract extension.
Footballguys view: Robinson will play out the third year of his contract and be ready for a new deal at age 27. He could surpass his previous contract's 14 million per year terms by a few million or more if he performs as well as he did last year.
    Link to story
    Allen Robinson player page

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake not worried about contract
Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake said he is not worried about his contract situation and believes he will receive an extension at some point.
Footballguys view: Unlike franchise tag players, Drake and Cardinals can still negotiate because they used the transition tag on him. If Drake performs the same way he did last year down the stretch, the Cardinals will probably sign him to a long term deal in 2021. Chase Edmonds and Eno Benjamin's dynasty value will hinge on Drake's future status.

    Kenyan Drake player page

Chargers | Hunter Henry unable to reach agreement
Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry did not reach a long-term agreement with the Chargers before the July 15 deadline and will play under the one-year franchise tag tender offer.
Footballguys view: Henry will make 10.6 million this year. If he can stay healthy and produce this year, he'll get a 2021 contract like the four-year $44 million dollar deal fellow 2016 draftee Austin Hooper got from Cleveland this offseason.
    Link to story
    Hunter Henry player page

Bengals | No new deal for A.J. Green
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green did not reach a long-term agreement with the Bengals before the July 15 deadline and will play under the one-year franchise tag tender offer.
Footballguys view: As expected Green will play under the one year, 17.86 million dollar contract. If he stays healthy, he'll be a steal at current ADP, but Green hasn't done that for the last two years.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott to play under tag
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott did not reach a long-term agreement with the Cowboys before the July 15 deadline and will play under the one-year franchise tag tender offer.

Titans | Derrick Henry agrees to extension
Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry agreed to a new four-year contract with the Titans Wednesday, July 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: The terms were later announced at four years, 50 million, with 25.5 million guaranteed. So basically the Titans gave Henry two franchise tags plus a few million up front for security and Henry will have a chance to earn his year three and four salaries with play over the next two years. It's not that different from the deal Le'Veon Bell signed with the Jets and sends a clear signal that the Titans are going to give this team a two or three year window to push for the top of the AFC and a Super Bowl berth.

Dolphins | Tua Tagovailoa's status unknown
Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa (hip) was examined by team doctors during the brief availability period this offseason, but head coach Brian Flores didn't say much about what it means for 2020. 'Yes, he was examined, but again, 'examined' and then doing a two-hour practice and playing in a game - there's a process to all those things,' Flores said. 'So, as far as whether or not he can or can't do something, it would be hard to say.'
Footballguys view: If Tagovailoa is physically sound and stays healthy through camp, he could take over during the season, but if he is not 100% to open camp the team could decide to take it slow with his on-field development since they have Ryan Fitzpatrick. It's wiser to bet on Tagovailoa starting more games than Fitzpatrick, but be open to this changing when we learn about Tagovailoa's condition at the open of camp.

    Texans | Kenny Stills arrested
Houston Texans WR Kenny Stills was among 87 people arrested Tuesday, July 14, while allegedly protesting outside of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's home. The group was in protest demanding action for the Breonna Taylor case, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. Stills was charged with intimidating a participant in the legal process, a felony, as well as misdemeanor disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. His arraignment was set for 9 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Footballguys view: This doesn't fall under typical off-field arrests and the league may not pursue any discipline against Stills for this. He's part of a crowded and uncertain Texans wide receiver picture in the wake of the DeAndre Hopkins trade and he has often been the last drafted of the top four - if he is drafted at all.
    Link to story
    Kenny Stills player page

Dolphins | Miami keeping open mind at QB
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to open the season as the starter, but the team is reportedly 'open-minded' about playing Tua Tagovailoa and has no intention to 'redshirt' him, according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson via a source.
Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick might be used to get through rough matchups against Buffalo and New England to open the season, and maybe San Francisco and Denver in Weeks 5-6, or at least until the rebuilt offensive line settles down. Tagovailoa's medical checkups and ability to stay healthy in camp will be important, but from a processor speed and maturity point of view, he's ready to start in the NFL. It's reasonable to take Tagovailoa ahead of Fitzpatrick in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

Cowboys | Defenders got to Ezekiel Elliott late in 2019
Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott recorded 39 carries in which he ran at least five yards before getting contacted in 2019 - the most by any running back and second in the league overall - according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: The Cowboys offensive line lost Travis Frederick to retirement but the addition of Ceedee Lamb should help keep defenses honest. Elliott is still in one of the best situations in the league and he's one of the best talents at his position. Taking him #2 overall over Saquon Barkley isn't crazy even though Barkley will go #2 in most drafts.

Ravens | Lamar Jackson exceptionally elusive
Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson led the league with 47 carries in which he ran at least five yards before getting contacted in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: Jackson had a lot of opportunities to decide when he would run and he chose well. He also possesses as much natural speed and elusiveness as any quarterback since Michael Vick. The offensive line lost possible Hall of Famer Marshal Yanda but otherwise the offense should be even better this year.

Patriots | Mohamed Sanu working with Jarrett Stidham
New England Patriots WR Mohamed Sanu shared a video of himself working out with QB Jarrett Stidham Monday, July 13.
Footballguys view: Sanu should be a bigger part of the Patriots pass offense after having an ankle issue that hampered him last year surgically repaired this offseason. He'll probably hurt the ceiling of Julian Edelman more than he'll establish fantasy relevance for himself.
    Link to story
    Mohamed Sanu player page

Eagles | Alshon Jeffery likely to land on PUP
Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (foot) 'is almost certain to start training camp' on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice.com. Kempski also notes it's still possible, but unlikely, Jeffery is traded.
Footballguys view: No one is going to want to pay nearly 10 million dollars for Jeffery when it's not even certain if he can avoid the PUP list to start the season. He has also criticized Carson Wentz through media backchannels, but the team is stuck with him after they converted his 2020 salary to guaranteed money in exchange for a small pay cut last year. Jeffery could be of help in deep best ball leagues and might be a midseason waiver wire pickup but that's about it.

    Saturday Update

Eagles | Jalen Reagor's signing expected Monday
Philadelphia Eagles WR Jalen Reagor is expected to take his team physical Monday, July 20, in Philadelphia, according to a source, and sign his rookie contract.

Vikings | Kirk Cousins shined outside pocket
Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins earned a 84.1 Pro Football Focus passing grade on throws outside the pocket in 2019 which ranked second among quarterbacks.

Packers | Davante Adams creates space
Green Bay Packers WR Davante Adams' 3.3 average yards of separation per target was fourth among the 29 receivers with at least 100 targets in 2019.

Browns | Austin Hooper a dependable target
Cleveland Browns TE Austin Hooper leads all tight ends with a 77.3 percent catch rate since the start of 2017, and he dropped one pass on 97 targets last season.

Ravens | Mark Andrews delivered on third down
Baltimore Ravens TE Mark Andrews had 17 receptions on 36 targets for 269 yards on third down in 2019, leading all tight ends in each category.

Eagles | Zach Ertz a favorite target
Philadelphia Eagles TE Zach Ertz leads all tight ends with 291 targets over the past two seasons.

Bengals | Alex Erickson may not make team
Cincinnati Bengals WR Alex Erickson could be on the roster bubble during training camp since the team added WRs Tee Higgins and Scotty Washington this offseason. The team would save $1.9 million in salary cap space if Erickson were released.
Footballguys view: Erickson contributes on special teams and has had a role on offense at times, but if A.J. Green and John Ross are healthy, he could be out of a roster spot in a numbers crunch.
    Link to story
    Alex Erickson player page

Seahawks | Josh Gordon could return
Free-agent WR Josh Gordon (Seahawks) could re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks if he is reinstated before the 2020 season, according to ESPN's Brady Henderson. Gordon has remained in the Seattle area this offseason and would like to play for the Seahawks.
Footballguys view: Gordon wouldn't be as big a threat to Tyler Lockett or DK Metcalf's fantasy outlook as an Antonio Brown signing, but he would be an upgrade to their WR3 spot nonetheless. He's unlikely to be fantasy relevant wherever he lands, but re-joining Seattle would upgrade Russell Wilson's stock.
    Link to story
    Josh Gordon player page

Seahawks | Seattle not close to deal with Antonio Brown
Free-agent WR Antonio Brown (Patriots) received some interest from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason, but the two sides are not close to a contract agreement because of his off-field issues, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The league hasn't settled on a suspension or otherwise resolved Brown's status with the league in light of off-field incidents, so that could be the holdup in coming to an agreement. The Seahawks remain one of the most likely if not the most likely team to sign Brown.
    Link to story

Bengals | A.J. Green wants 4 more years
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green said Friday, July 17, that he wants to 'play another four years, and I hope to retire as a Bengal.'

Bengals | A.J. Green signs franchise tender
Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green on Friday, July 17, signed his one-year franchise tender and is expected to report on time to camp.
Footballguys view: Yannick Ngakoue is the last franchise tag player to not sign his tender. Green said today that his plan is to play four more years and retire a Bengal.

    A.J. Green player page

Jaguars | Gardner Minshew tops in scramble rate
Jacksonville Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew had the highest scramble rate (8.9 percent) of any quarterback in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus data.
Footballguys view: This can create a foundation for rushing stats, but it's also a picture of a rookie quarterback. Minshew's game should be more mature this year and he might be a viable QB2/Superflex with little to no legitimate competition on the roster. Even if the Jaguars draft a quarterback high next year, Minshew can make a resume for the other 31 teams to reference when he's a free agency in 2023 with his performance this year.

    Sunday Update

Cowboys | Amari Cooper delivered on the outside
Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper ranked second in the NFL in 2019 with a 59 percent catch rate on passes of 20-plus yards, and he ranked first with 176 receiving yards on receptions within two yards of the sideline.

Buccaneers | Chris Godwin delivered on deep balls
Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin caught 12 of his 19 targets on passes that traveled 20-plus yards through the air last year, the best rate among players with at least 15 such targets.

Chargers | Keenan Allen in elite company
Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen is one of four receivers with at least 300 catches and 3,500 yards since the start of the 2017 season.

Bills | Two TEs may not make team
Buffalo Bills TEs Jason Croom and Nate Becker likely will need to have strong training camps if they want a chance to earn a spot on the final roster, in the opinion of BillsWire's Justin DiLoro.
Footballguys view: Croom is a former wide receiver, which makes him notable for deep dynasty fantasy leagues, but his window of opportunity with the Bills appears to have passed.
    Link to story

Packers | Marquez Valdes-Scantling targeted deep
Green Bay Packers WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling finished fourth in the league in 2019 with an average depth of target of 16.9 yards, according to Pro Football Reference's advanced receiving data.
Footballguys view: Allen Lazard should get more deep targets this year, and Devin Funchess could also soak up some of the extra deep targets that Valdes-Scantling won't get unless he has a very strong training camp. The Packers still only have one reliable passcatcher for fantasy leagues.
