NFL Player News - Week of 5/4/20

    Courtesy of Footballguys.com

    Ravens | J.K. Dobbins adds big-play threat
Baltimore Ravens second-round pick RB J.K. Dobbins adds a big-play threat with breakaway speed who runs with a low center of gravity and shows a consistent ability to break tackles. 'What I like most about him is if he's got a crease, he's gone,' general manager Eric DeCosta said. 'He's a guy that has an extra gear through the second and third levels of the defense. He can make big plays, and he did that in every game this year. He's got a little bit of a game-breaker style to him.'

Rams | Cam Akers hard to bring down
Los Angeles Rams second-round pick RB Cam Akers tallied 904 yards of his 1,144 rushing yards (79 percent) after contact at Florida State last season.

Jets | Less is more for Le'Veon Bell
New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell is expected to receive a lighter workload this season as the team looks to include more backs into the scheme. 'I do think we have some guys that can help maybe lessen the load on (Bell) to where it's not all on him,' head coach Adam Gase said. 'Hopefully, we can get some of the younger backs to where we can make a good one-two punch to where we can really excel instead of feeling like it's just all on him all the time.'

Cardinals | Big role for Dan Arnold?
Arizona Cardinals TE Dan Arnold 'has a chance to make a real impact' for the offense in 2020, particularly as a target in the red zone, according to Scott Bordow of The Athletic.
    Link to story

Bears | More from Riley Ridley in Year 2?
Chicago Bears WR Riley Ridley is expected to 'play a much bigger role' in his second season, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.

Chargers | Hunter Henry excited for QB change
Los Angeles Chargers TE Hunter Henry said he is excited to see what a more mobile quarterback can bring to the offense. 'There are so many different things that you can do with a mobile quarterback that can open your offense,' Henry said. 'I'm looking forward to seeing that aspect of our offense grow.'

NFL | Cam Newton willing to wait?
Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Panthers) has no plans to sign with any team to be a backup and will wait until a starter suffers an injury if need be, according to Joe Person of The Athletic.

    Cam Newton player page

Colts | Michael Pittman Jr. the missing piece?
Indianapolis Colts WR Michael Pittman Jr. fills a void in the receiving corps, according to team scout Chris McGaha. 'He's kind of a guy who plays above the rim,' McGaha said. 'He brings an element that we were kind of missing to our wideout room in 2019, that big-bodied presence.'
    Link to story

Vikings | Slot work very nice to Justin Jefferson
Minnesota Vikings first-round draft pick WR Justin Jefferson led all players in the 2020 draft class with 730 receiving yards from the slot, according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: 109 of his 111 receptions last year came from the slot. He played outside for only five snaps in 2019. That's where Jefferson is best used from because of his ability to get off the line cleanly. If the Vikings line up Jefferson outside then he needs to learn how to better beat press coverage, something he struggled with two years ago at LSU when he played there much more often.

Browns | Baker Mayfield off the mark in 2019
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield completed 66.8 percent of his passes in between one and 20 yards in 2019 - the lowest such mark in the league.
Footballguys view: Mayfield had an off season, some would say a sophomore slump, but he is ready to bounce back in 2020. The Browns have gone out of the way to get better help around him, especially up front on the offensive line. He's a QB2 with upside for Fantasy GMs this season.
    Link to story
    Baker Mayfield player page

Broncos | Noah Fant ready to explode in Year 2?
Denver Broncos TE Noah Fant is going to emerge as a 'headache for defensive coordinators and show his more game-changing talent on a far more frequent basis,' according to Aric DiLalla of the team's website.
Footballguys view: That's a good bet in terms of receptions, but touchdown catches may be tough for him to come by. The Broncos added supreme weapons at the wide receiver position in the draft. Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler should get plenty of work and help the team score more points. However, Fant's red-zone targets may take the biggest hit from fourth-round pick Albert Okwuegbunam -- a college teammate of QB Drew Lock who caught 17 TDs in two seasons together.
    Link to story
    Noah Fant player page

Giants | Daniel Jones' accuracy in question?
New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed only 48.8 percent of his passes that traveled at least 10 yards downfield last season - the second-worst mark in the league in 2019.
Footballguys view: Jones needs better protection if the team wants him to play up to his potential. That's something the team has emphasized this offseason, specifically by selecting OT Andrew Thomas with the No.4 overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft.
    Link to story
    Daniel Jones player page

Jets | Sam Darnold struggled on play-action last year
New York Jets QB Sam Darnold was 43.8 percent accurate on play-action passes last season - the lowest such mark in the league.
Footballguys view: Darnold should line up for better production on such passes this year. The Jets added talent for him in the passing game like free agent Breshad Perriman and second-round draft pick Denzel Mims.
    Link to story
    Sam Darnold player page

Dolphins | Miami struggled on screen plays in 2019
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick averaged 2.8 yards per play on screen passes last season - the lowest such mark in the league.

Eagles | Big things expected from Alshon Jeffery
Philadelphia Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery (foot) is being counted on to be a 'major part of the offense' as he recovers from his Lisfranc injury, according to Dave Spadaro of the team's website. Spadaro also noted that the Eagles have 'made sure this offseason to get the word out that Jeffrey is being counted on.'
Footballguys view: We'll believe it when we see it. Jeffery is a talented veteran but his best season with the Eagles came back in 2017 when he was the No.18 fantasy receiver (standard-scoring leagues). He hasn't played a full 16-game season since that time. If Jeffery is as involved as the team's website is speculating then that means he's a low-end WR2 for Fantasy GMs in 2020.
    Link to story
    Alshon Jeffery player page

Browns | Harrison Bryant a weapon in the slot
Cleveland Browns fourth-round draft pick TE Harrison Bryant led all tight ends in the 2020 draft class with 730 receiving yards from the slot, according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: Bryant showed well on film in college at FAU. He has strength after the catch and knows how to use his frame to box out smaller defenders. We'll see how the rookie develops this year. He's currently third on the depth chart behind Austin Hooper and David Njoku.
    Link to story

Saints | Jameis Winston mastered play-action in 2019
New Orleans Saints QB Jameis Winston completed 66.7 percent of his passes last season on play-action, making him the second-most accurate passer on such throws in the league.
    Link to story
    Jameis Winston player page

Cowboys | Dak Prescott deadly on dropback passes
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott completed 70.1 percent of his passes last season on straight dropback passes - defined as a pass where the quarterback didn't use play action or throw a screen - making him the most accurate quarterback on such throws in the NFL.
Footballguys view: Defenses are set to stop Ezekiel Elliott and that threat helps open things up for the passing game. Expect the team to keep using that to their advantage ...especially with more weapons around Prescott in 2020.
    Link to story
    Dak Prescott player page

49ers | JaMycal Hasty to compete for roster spot
San Francisco 49ers RB JaMycal Hasty is expected to compete with RB Jerick McKinnon for the third-down back job during training camp. Hasty is expected to also be a solid contributor on special teams.
Footballguys view: Hasty was a dangerous pass-catching weapon for the Baylor offense. The 2020 undrafted free agent should be a third-down weapon in the pros. Hasty does a good job of eluding linebackers in space and understands how to stack moves. He's got a high football intelligence and is quick in his reaction time when defenders are oncoming. McKinnon was signed two years ago and has yet to play a down for the 49ers due to injury. He took a pay cut this year to stay with the team but his spot on the 53-man roster is no guarantee.
    Link to story
    Jerick McKinnon player page

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham top candidate to be starter
New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham is considered the leading candidate to start at quarterback in 2020, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.
Footballguys view: Stidham is their guy as they've made no move that would make anyone think otherwise. He was a fourth-round pick out of Auburn last year but he has first-round tools and was thought of as a potential first-round pick before his senior season in college. It's ridiculous to think the Patriots are 'Tanking for Trevor Lawrence' in 2020. Bill Belichick thinks he can win games with Stidham as his starter.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake hopes to sign long-term deal
Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake said he was fine with receiving the franchise tag this offseason and hopes the two sides will be able to reach a long-term contract at some point.
Footballguys view: The fresh start Drake had with the Cardinals last year was outstanding. He was not a consistently productive player with the Dolphins, but he immediately showed what kind of large impact he could have in the NFL when he was traded to the Cardinals. He's playing on the franchise tag for now, which means the two sides have until July 15th to get a long-term deal done.

Chiefs | Shea Patterson to join Chiefs
Undrafted free-agent QB Shea Patterson (Michigan) agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, May 3, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Patterson never played up to his full potential in college at Michigan. He's a big-name college quarterback but most likely going to have to stick as a backup or practice squad player at least early in his NFL career.

    Tuesday Update

    Dolphins | Albert Wilson restructures
Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson restructured his contract Tuesday, May 5, which is now worth a base value of $3 million with $1 million more in potential incentives.

Seahawks | Marshawn Lynch talking with SEA
Free-agent RB Marshawn Lynch (Seahawks) said his agent has been in talks with the Seattle Seahawks recently.

Redskins | Antonio Gibson primed for early playing time?
Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins RB/WR Antonio Gibson is expected to be utilized more as a running back than a receiver in the NFL. However, offensive coordinator Scott Turner told reporters, 'That's what he showed through the draft process (the ability to operate as a running back and operate as a slot receiver as well). That's what we are going to try to do with him. ... If he can handle it, he'll get more and more action.''This is a very versatile, young football player that we really think is going to be a guy that can get on the field for us early and contribute,' head coach Ron Rivera said.

Eagles | Jalen Hurts a Lamar Jackson clone?
Philadelphia Eagles second-round draft pick QB Jalen Hurts 'was drafted as a quarterback and is a quarterback first,' according to head coach Doug Pederson, who added that senior offensive consultant Marty Mornhinweg 'felt very similar to Jalen as he did Lamar (Jackson).'
    Link to story

Browns | Cleveland stunned Harrison Bryant fell
Cleveland Browns fourth-round draft pick TE Harrison Bryant 'was a player that we wouldn't have expected to be necessarily available at (pick No.) 115,' according to general manager Andrew Berry.'Knowing how important tight end is to the offensive system, and given how talented of a pass-catcher that we think Harrison is, he really was the person on the board,' Berry said.
    Link to story

Ravens | Baltimore embracing Devin Duvernay's "anger"
Baltimore Ravens third-round draft pick WR Devin Duvernay is an 'angry football player,' according to general manager Eric DeCosta.'Players in general, if you watch enough tape, you get a vibe about them. ... I would say with Devin, he's an angry football player. I like his style play, I like his energy, I like his competitive spirit. I like his toughness, and I like his speed. I think those things translate to Baltimore very well,' DeCosta said.

Bills | Josh Allen struggled deep in 2019
Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen completed a mere 17.1 percent of his throws that traveled at least 20 yards downfield, according to Pro Football Focus. It tied Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph for the worst mark in the league.

Eagles | Carson Wentz suffered concussion vs. SEA
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz said he suffered a concussion during the Wild Card playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. He said he dealt with the symptoms after the game.

Eagles | Carson Wentz excited about new QB
Philadelphia Eagles QB Carson Wentz said he is excited about the addition of QB Jalen Hurts to the roster. He said Hurts will add a healthy competitive environment for the Eagles.
Footballguys view: Hurts is no threat to Wentz as the starter. Instead, the Eagles could use Hurts as a 'Taysom Hill-like' threat due to his dual skill set as a runner and a passer. Hurts has great leadership qualities and is a team-first guy. As a passer there is much-needed development that needs to happen if he's ever going to push for a starting job in the pros.

Bears | Ted Ginn's signing official
Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Ted Ginn Jr. (Saints) officially signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears Monday, May 4. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Ginn isn't the same player he used to be but he still has plenty of speed. He's down the depth chart with the Bears but could be a part-time player to help take the top off the defense. That role would not have much fantasy value in 2020.
    Link to story
    Ted Ginn Jr player page

Colts | No decision on Adam Vinatieri
Free-agent PK Adam Vinatieri (knee) is still an option for the Indianapolis Colts, but head coach Frank Reich said the team will not make a decision on Vinatieri until his recovery from knee surgery is complete.

Cowboys | Andy Dalton officially signs
Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Andy Dalton's contract is official, Monday, May 4. The deal is a one-year, $3 million pact, with an additional $4 million available via incentives through reaching playing-time benchmarks during the regular season and postseason, as well as the team making the playoffs.
Footballguys view: Dalton gets to go back to Texas for one year as a backup to Dak Prescott. This gives the Cowboys plenty of veteran insurance in case Dalton has to be thrust into the starting lineup. Prescott has the franchise tag now but the two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal.
    Link to story
    Andy Dalton player page

    Cowboys | Cooper Rush waived
Dallas Cowboys QB Cooper Rush was waived Monday, May 4.
Footballguys view: The team had to make some room for Andy Dalton on the roster. Rush was kind of a cult favorite in Dallas but now he will try to latch on with another team as more than a camp arm this summer.
    Link to story
    Cooper Rush player page

Rams | Van Jefferson a polished route runner
Los Angeles Rams second-round pick WR Van Jefferson impressed the Rams with how technically sound he was in running routes. He reminded them of a combination of WRs Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods.
Footballguys view: There's a lot to like about Jefferson's game. His father is a long-time NFL receiver's coach and Jefferson has learned a ton from him. Jefferson can cut a rug and gets open with guile and savvy. He knows how to set up defenders to create the most separation at the route stem which makes him as pro-ready as a rookie can get.

    Wednesday Update

Packers | AJ Dillon a bit of a physical marvel
Green Bay Packers RB AJ Dillon weighed 247 pounds last spring prior to his final year at Boston College and reportedly only had five percent body fat, according to former position coach Brian White.'It's amazing, when you see him with his shirt off, he's got this little skinny waist and these huge shoulders, and these legs of tree trunks that are beyond anything you've ever seen,' White told Packers.com.
Footballguys view: Dillon is big, powerful and loves to initiate contact. He is tough to bring down and knows how to win collisions. There's not a lot of nuance to Dillon's game, and he sometimes looks for a defender rather than watching for a hole or a cutback lane. We'll see how he works into the Packers backfield in 2020.
    Link to story

Titans | Derrick Henry makes hay after contact
Tennessee Titans RB Derrick Henry is the only running back in the league with at least 500 carries since 2017 to average at least four yards after contact, according to Pro Football Focus.
Footballguys view: There's no need for advanced data here. Everyone who has seen Henry play one down knows he is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. Expect him to put up similar numbers before and after contact in 2020.
    Link to story
    Derrick Henry player page

Broncos | Jerry Jeudy was atop Denver's board?
Denver Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy was the top-ranked player on the team's draft board, according to general manager John Elway.'We met with him in Indianapolis (at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine) and really liked him and liked his mentality. ... Jerry was our guy from the get-go,' Elway said.
Footballguys view: Jeudy was largely considered the best receiver in one of the greatest receiver classes in NFL history. His speed, body control and quickness make him a great target for second-year QB Drew Lock. Jeudy is sometimes compared to Odell Beckham Jr. and has star ability from day one. He'll start on the outside opposite of emerging star Courtland Sutton.
    Link to story

Raiders | Jon Gruden excited by Bryan Edwards
Las Vegas Raiders WR Bryan Edwards dealt with his fair share of injuries in college (a meniscus tear in November of 2019 as well as a concussion and sports hernia surgery in 2017), but that was hardly a detriment to head coach Jon Gruden, who was thrilled when the Raiders were able to select him in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.'I was like a dog trying to get back in the house (trying to get general manager) Mike Mayock to pull the trigger on this. I was excited to get Edwards, you have no idea,' Gruden said.
Footballguys view: Edwards, a third-round pick out of South Carolina in the 2020 NFL draft, is a big-bodied target who can win passes in the air. He's a long-strider who does a good job of tracking passes down the field. Edwards is not sudden and he needs to learn how to run better routes if he's going to be a solid pro. We'll see how he works into the mix behind fellow rookie Henry Ruggs III, veteran Tyrell Williams and second-year slot receiver Hunter Renfrow.
    Link to story

Texans | Four-man rushes troubled Deshaun Watson
Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson completed only 52 percent of his passes against a four-man rush in 2019 - the second-worst mark in the league.
Footballguys view: The Texans offensive line is a work in progress to say the least. Watson thrives when he's blitzed because he's got the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet and evade the rush. He needs to be better when he's not pressured in 2020.
    Link to story
    Deshaun Watson player page

Colts | Philip Rivers did good work on first down
Indianapolis Colts QB Philip Rivers completed 64.9 percent of his first-down passing attempts as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2019 - the fifth-best mark in the league.
Footballguys view: That was with the Chargers and now he's with the Colts. We'll see if he can continue that early-down success with his new team. Rivers threw too many interceptions last year and needs to cut that down in a big way if things are going to work out for one year with the Colts.
    Link to story
    Philip Rivers player page

Giants | Daniel Jones thrived on play-action
New York Giants QB Daniel Jones completed 64.6 percent of his passes on play-action throws as a rookie - the eighth-best mark in the league. Conversely, he was a 51.3 percent passer on straight dropbacks in 2019.
Footballguys view: Jones does a good job going down the field if he's got time. The Giants have made moves to improve their offensive line, which should make Jones even more dangerous on such passes.
    Link to story
    Daniel Jones player page

Broncos | Drew Lock talks new Denver offense
Denver Broncos QB Drew Lock addressed what he has learned about offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur's system after studying it since the pandemic shutdown began. 'There's definitely more possibilities for us to press the ball downfield, which I definitely think plays into my strengths and the receivers we have on this team,' said Lock Tuesday, May 5. 'We have guys who can fly down the field. It gives me the option of changing a curl route to a go route if we get man (coverage). I think we will press the ball downfield more than we did last year.'
Footballguys view: The Broncos have went 'all in' with Lock as their quarterback. He was 4-1 as a starter last year during his rookie season and the team hopes they (finally) have their franchise quarterback. With all that speed on offense, and with new OC Pat Shurmur, Lock could be an exciting QB2 for Fantasy GMs if he continues to develop.

Patriots | New England officially signs eight others
Updating previous stories, undrafted free-agent TE Jake Burt (Boston College), WR Will Hastings (Auburn), QB Brian Lewerke (Michigan State), WR Sean Riley (Syracuse), QB J'Mar Smith (Louisiana Tech), RB J.J. Taylor, WR Jeff Thomas (Miami) and WR Isaiah Zuber officially signed three-year deals with the New England Patriots Tuesday, May 5. Financial terms weren't disclosed.
Footballguys view: Lewerke is a strong-armed passer with mobility. Because of the Patriots quarterback situation he'll have a chance to make the 53-man roster but seems more destined for the practice squad. Lewerke has some stubborn traits and will force passes that aren't there, trusting in his arm to make the completion. If he wants to be an effective pro quarterback that's the biggest part of his game he'll need to improve.

Raiders | DeShone Kizer leaving Las Vegas

Las Vegas Raiders QB DeShone Kizer was waived Tuesday, May 5, according to a source.
Footballguys view: The Raiders have Nathan Peterman, who they really like, as the No.3 quarterback on the roster. They'll have Derek Carr compete with Marcus Mariota for a starting job in training camp. Kizer might latch on with a team as a camp arm somewhere.

NFL | Travel bans hurting Cam Newton?
Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Panthers) remains unsigned, in part, because he was released after travel restrictions were put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to former teammate TE Greg Olsen Tuesday, May 5. Olsen thinks it's hurting Newton that he can't answer questions interested teams may have about his health.
Footballguys view: The travel restrictions certainly aren't helping the situation but how much it's hurting Newton's case is up for debate. Reports seem to indicate that Newton is going to be patient in waiting for the right opportunity. The travel restrictions have not hurt other QBs like Jameis Winston or Andy Dalton this offseason. Newton may wait for someone to get hurt before he signs with the chance to start.

Jets | Frank Gore joins NYJ
Free-agent RB Frank Gore (Bills) is signing a one-year deal with the New York Jets, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN Tuesday, May 5. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.
Footballguys view: Gore is never going to retire! He's reunited with former Dolphins coach Adam Gase who Gore played for back in 2018. This will be year 16 for the veteran back and future Hall of Famer. He'll work in as a depth player behind starter Le'Veon Bell.

    Thursday Update

49ers | Brandon Aiyuk could have gone higher
San Francisco 49ers first-round pick WR Brandon Aiyuk, whom the team selected at No. 25 overall, was a player they would have taken at 13th overall if they weren't able to trade down, according to general manager John Lynch.
    Link to story

Packers | Jordan Love could sit two years
Green Bay Packers first-round pick QB Jordan Love was likely taken without any intention of starting in 2020 or possibly 2021, according to MMQB's Albert Breer. Most scouts Breer talked to believed Love was raw to the point where two or three years of runway to becoming a starter would be beneficial.

Browns | Nick Chubb taking it to defenses
Cleveland Browns RB Nick Chubb has forced a league-high 110 missed tackles on rushing attempts since 2018 - making him only one of three backs to record at least 100 over that stretch - according to Pro Football Focus.

Panthers | D.J. Moore a handful in the open field
Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore forced 30 missed tackles on receptions over the last two seasons - the most by any receiver and the second-highest mark by a receiver or tight end over that stretch - according to Pro Football Focus.

Rams | Cooper Kupp got it done in the slot in 2019
Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp led all receivers with 853 yards from the slot in 2019, according to Pro Football Focus.

Browns | Kareem Hunt good at making tacklers look bad
Cleveland Browns RB Kareem Hunt has forced 123 missed tackles on running attempts since 2017 - the second-highest total in the league over that span.

Raiders | Devontae Booker heading to Las Vegas
Free-agent RB Devontae Booker (Broncos) reportedly agreed to terms with the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday, May 6.

Chargers | Three-man committee for Chargers in 2020?
Los Angeles Chargers RBs Austin Ekeler, Justin Jackson and rookie Joshua Kelley are all expected to remain involved in the offense this season, according to comments made by office coordinator Shane Steichen.'All three of those guys are going to share the load. They all bring something unique,' Steichen said.

Chargers | Mike Williams looking for big 2020 season
Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams said he is looking to post 1,300 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns this upcoming season.
Footballguys view: Williams certainly has the talent to do just that. It will be interesting to see how the Chargers QB situation shakes out. They have seasoned veteran Tyrod Taylor as their starter but rookie first-round pick Justin Herbert is waiting in the wings. Taylor is safe with the football and may not take many chances with the ball down the field. That could negatively impact Williams' production in 2020.
    Link to story

Browns | Rashard Higgins could be No. 3 WR
Cleveland Browns WR Rashard Higgins has a good chance to win the No. 3 receiver job during training camp in part because of his chemistry with QB Baker Mayfield, in the opinion of The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Mary Kay Cabot.
Footballguys view: Higgins was a free agent this year but got little interest on the open market. He returns to the Browns but the WR room is more jam-packed than it was last year. Higgins likely will compete with rookie WR Donovan Peoples-Jones for the job.
    Link to story
    Rashard Higgins player page

Raiders | Keelan Doss signs tender
Las Vegas Raiders exclusive rights free-agent WR Keelan Doss signed his one-year tender offer Wednesday, May 6. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Doss was picked up as an undrafted free agent in 2019 out of UC-Davis. He's got size and decent speed as a receiver, and Doss caught 11 passes for 113 yards last year. He was an exclusive rights free agent so he didn't have much of a choice but to sign the tender. The Raiders WR room is a lot more cramped after the draft and the addition of Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards. Doss is no lock for the 53-man roster.
    Link to story
    Keelan Doss player page

Ravens | J.K. Dobbins seen as three-down RB
Baltimore Ravens RB J.K. Dobbins has the skills to be a three-down running back in the NFL, according to general manager Eric DeCosta. DeCosta pointed out Dobbins' durability and his fit in the offense.
Footballguys view: The Ravens are loaded with talent at the running back position. Getting Dobbins in the draft just makes a strength for them stronger. Dobbins is natural and creative as a runner, but it's his skill as a receiver that really stands out. He's certainly a three-down player and will challenge Mark Ingram for the top spot in the Ravens backfield.
    Link to story

Ravens | James Proche under contract
Baltimore Ravens sixth-round draft choice WR James Proche signed a four-year contract with the Ravens Wednesday, May 6. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Proche is a strong slot receiver with a nose for the end zone (27 touchdowns over the last two years). He has amazing ball skills and thrives on winning contested catches. Proche lacks long speed but his competitive nature on intermediate routes could make him a favorite target of QB Lamar Jackson. We'll see how Proche fits into the pecking order at wide receiver for the Ravens. He's likely competing for the No.4 spot in the room.
    Link to story

Chiefs | Clyde Edwards-Helaire stands out in air
Kansas City Chiefs first-round pick RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire's ability in the receiving game is what the team felt made him stand out from the rest of the backs in the draft. 'I was on the same team as (Washington Redskins RB) Derrius Guice in high school ... so I had to find a different way to get on the field,' Edwards-Helaire said. They wanted me to get on the field so I started playing slot receiver, and I kind of hopped back and forth from slot to the backfield in a two-back set, so ultimately it was just kind of something that was part of my DNA.'
Footballguys view: Edwards-Helaire can be a special player at the pro level. He's a compact runner who runs with great contact balance, and it's really tough to bring him down with just an arm tackle. That balance and agility really help him in the open space as a receiver. Edwards-Helaire is going to compete for the starting job with Damien Williams in training camp. Both are talented, so expect the Chiefs to implement some form of RBBC for the 2020 season.
    Link to story

Jaguars | Leonard Fournette staying put
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette will be a big part of the offense in 2020, according to general manager David Caldwell. Fournette was involved in trade talks in the offseason.
Footballguys view: The Jaguars could find no takers for Fournette on the trade block. He stays now and should be utilized early and often as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. However, he is unlikely to get the total number of carries and targets that he had last year due to additions like Chris Thompson to the backfield. He was the No.13 running back (standard-scoring leagues) last year with a heavy workload, so expect that number to dip to more low-end RB2 production for Fantasy GMs.

    Friday Update

Bears | GM "believes" in Mitchell Trubisky
Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky still has belief of general manager Ryan Pace even though the quarterback's fifth-year contract option wasn't exercised. 'We've always had the approach that we're honest and we're truthful with our players and our staff, and we move on and we get to work. ...' Pace said Thursday, May 7, in an interview on radio station WSCR. 'Mitch gets it. Everyone's competing. Everyone's focused on better results. That's the entire team. That starts with me and everybody. We believe in Mitch -- that doesn't change. ... I think you can point to [cornerback] Kyle Fuller as a great example of a player that didn't get his option exercised. I think we would say it worked out well for him and for us.'

Steelers | Big Ben to be ready
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) is doing well in his rehab and expected to be ready for the season, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. 'As we sit here today, we are extremely confident in his readiness,' Tomlin said. 'We are enjoying the process that he's going through right now. Obviously, it's not without its angst. The guy is coming off a season-ending injury and surgery. But we like where we are. He's throwing on a rehab schedule, and it's going well, and we fully anticipate him being ready to go for that opener.'

Chiefs | Travis Kelce a monster in the red zone

Ravens | Slot work paid off for Baltimore in 2019

Patriots | Bill Belichick content with QBs room
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Thursday, May 7, he's content with the team's options at quarterback after signing undrafted free-agent QBs Brian Lewerke and J'Mar Smith to go with Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham. 'Yeah, well that is where we are -- you never know what is going to happen down the road, but we feel like we have four good players there,' Belichick said on NFL Network. 'We added Brian and J'Mar to Hoyer and Stidham. We added Hoyer and had Stidham from last year. We like working with those guys and we will see how it goes.'
Footballguys view: The Patriots are likely to roll with Stidham as their starter in 2020. Stidham was a fourth-round pick last year but he showed some flashes in the preseason as a rookie. It's a huge shadow left by Tom Brady but with Belichick leading the way this team can still win enough games to get them around .500 on the season.

Bengals | Joe Burrow begins career as underdog
Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow and his team opened as five-point underdogs against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1, according to Caesars Sportsbook. Since 1989, quarterbacks selected first overall in the NFL draft have gone 3-16 against the spread in their first start.
Footballguys view: The Chargers are a helluva challenge for Burrow and the Bengals. They have a tough defense, a swarming defense and they just got better this offseason with additions like first-round pick ILB Kenneth Murray and free agent addition CB Chris Harris Jr.
    Link to story

Vikings | Kirk Cousins notes Christmas Day schedule quirk
Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins offered up his thoughts on his team's Christmas Day game against the New Orleans Saints, noting the peculiarity of having to play on a Friday. 'I haven't played on a Friday since high school. That will be interesting,' Cousins said.
Footballguys view: Cousins is a little quirky as a guy, so it's a schedule quirk he would notice. The league is going to have only one game on Christmas but it's a doozy. Vikings at the Saints is going to be must-see TV on Christmas afternoon.

Texans | David Johnson declining in efficiency
Houston Texans RB David Johnson's 3.60 rushing yards per attempt since the start of the 2017 season rank fifth-worst among all running backs with a minimum of 200 attempts in that time. Johnson gained a total of 1,308 rushing yards with nine touchdowns on 363 attempts over his last 26 games played.

Buccaneers | Tom Brady bringing pressure to Tampa
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady will have his team in the NFL spotlight in 2020, as the Bucs are scheduled to play in five prime-time games this season. They'll visit the Chicago Bears Thursday, Oct. 8, the Las Vegas Raiders Sunday, Oct. 25, New York Giants Monday, Nov. 2, and host the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Nov. 8 and the Los Angeles Rams Monday, Nov. 23.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott's deal will get done
Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will be signed to a long-term contract, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones Wednesday, May 6. 'Dak is the quarterback of our franchise now, and for many years to come,' Jones said. 'We've gotta get his contract--we've gotta get over that hurdle. But we'll do it, it'll ultimately get done.' Jones also said the free-agent signing of QB Andy Dalton has no bearing on Prescott's status with the team.

Saints | Austin Carr back with New Orleans
Free-agent WR Austin Carr (Saints) re-signed with the New Orleans Saints Thursday, May 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Carr was a restricted free agent but the team did not place a tender on him. He's back and should fill a role on special teams if he makes the 53-man roster.
    Link to story

Ravens | J.K. Dobbins signs rookie contract
Baltimore Ravens second-round draft choice RB J.K. Dobbins signed a four-year contract with the Ravens Thursday, May 7. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Dobbins is a fantastic prospect and has the skill to be one of the best running backs in the game in the future. The rookie from Ohio State is going to have to work in a RBBC this year with veteran Mark Ingram. We'll see if he can win the top spot on the depth chart in training camp or if Dobbins has to play more of a complementary role behind Ingram in 2020.
    Link to story

NFL | Joe Flacco recovering from surgery
Free-agent QB Joe Flacco (neck) has not signed with a team at this point because he is recovering from neck surgery he had in April. He is expected to be cleared by late August or early September.
Footballguys view: Flacco is not the same player he used to be, and we saw that last year when he was an ineffective starter for the Broncos. If cleared by August or September that means Flacco will have to wait until that time for a new opportunity. If another team signs him it will only be as a veteran backup.
    Link to story
    Joe Flacco player page

Bills | Buffalo signs three draft picks
Buffalo Bills sixth-round draft choice PK Tyler Bass, sixth-round draft choice WR Isaiah Hodgins and seventh-round draft choice CB Dane Jackson signed four-year contracts with the Bills Thursday, May 7. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Hodgins is a player we will monitor in dynasty formats. He lacks elite speed but he has top-tier field awareness and ball skills. Hodgins can win contested passes with ease and has a knack for finding the weakness in coverage. He's buried on the depth chart right now with the Bills but the rookie has skills worth keeping track of.
    Link to story

NFL | Cam Newton open to backup role?
Free-agent QB Cam Newton (Panthers) wants to start in the NFL, but he is open to accepting a reserve role in the right situation, according to sources.
Footballguys view: Newton is still out there for a team to sign and with other former starters landing backup gigs (Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton) it would seem like Newton is next. A team might want to bring him in for veteran depth or for a chance to push for a starting job. Perhaps some team like Jacksonville could see Newton as that sort of player.
    Link to story

Ravens | Baltimore rookie WRs are versatile
Baltimore Ravens WRs James Proche and Devin Duvernay enter their rookie seasons projected to play out of the slot, but both are capable of lining up on the outside. Baltimore doesn't have traditionally defined roles for receivers, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Both players were also credited for their hands, and Duvernay's 4.39-second 40-yard time was discussed by Harbaugh.'We're pretty diverse on our offense, as you know, and we have different kinds of option plays and RPO plays and dropback passes and deep passes, play-action passes, and we have one guy that can really run like crazy and make all kinds of catches,' Harbaugh said. 'We have another guy who can really run routes and has a feel for getting open and catch the ball like crazy. So, Lamar [Jackson] is going to love both those guys.'
Footballguys view: Proche is a strong slot receiver while Duvernay's game is all about speed. Both can be problems for defensive coordinators and we could see them become favorite targets of QB Lamar Jackson. As we continue to see Jackson develop as a quarterback, the Ravens passing game becomes more exciting from a fantasy perspective.
